Three sets of eyes peered out at the pale figure who stood motionless in the clearing. They had been chasing this prey for the better part of an hour and now that it seemed in lunging distance they were growing impatient.
"Remember to attack from the sides, not straight on, it will be easier to take it down." The mental message came from the middle Shifter who was flanked on either side by younger Shifters.
Everything seemed to slow down as they prepared to attack.
"On my count. One."
Heartbeats slowed.
"Two."
Muscles coiled.
"Three!"
The two youngsters lunged for the figure, quickly pulling it down to the ground so they could tear out the throat.
Deep laughter ended the game. The jaguar cubs won and had learned valuable hunting skills. They were getting better at it everyday.
"Well done kids!" Edward congratulated his children then started to play fight with them.
I watched, still from my hiding spot, as my small family played. I could feel the inner smile and an overwhelming sense of pride. Edward and I had made these little predators.
"Where's your mother? Bella?" Edward called while looking around for me. Silently I crept closer before lunging and taking him down. I purred as I rubbed myself on him. Ezra and Charley joined in, leaving loose fur and their scents on him so others would know who he belonged to.
When they were two months old they looked to be about eight months and that's when things started to get interesting. They both shifted for the first time, started walking, consumed more blood, and their eyes turned bright gold even when they weren't shifted. At three months old they started talking, which really freaked me out.
Charley was the first to speak. It wasn't in halting words either but a whole sentence.
"Mom, can I have some more." She said while holing out her sippy cup for more blood. I stared at her in shock for so long that she had to ask Edward.
Their development grew quicker than I could comprehend and so did their clothes! It was easier to dress them in something oversized and the next day they it fit perfectly. Not that I ever got the chance to dress them. Alice and Rose had so much fun playing dress up with their barbies and photo shoots that I didn't get much say in the matter.
At six months old Charley and Ezra were running through the forest with me, learning what it means to be Shifters. Edwards genetic make up gave some surprises. Their carving for blood skyrocketed, amazingly quick healing, strength, and speed were all greatly pronounced. Edward sometimes had a hard time keeping up with them.
We were both convinced they would be able to break the sound barrier at some point.
"I think we made it to Canada." Edward remarked. "Ready to head home?"
Home.
The house I returned to possessed so many good and bad memories that it was difficult to let go. For the sake of secrecy we had to leave. It went up on the market, priced way below what it was worth due to the deaths there, and I had an offer a week later by a young couple expecting their first child. They would create new memories, washing away the bad karma, over time.
The five of us moved a few hours away from Spokane, building a new house deep in the woods. A hundred acres on all sides allowed lots of privacy. Esme built a sprawling estate ten minutes from them and truly out did herself.
We had a smaller version, if you could call a - five bedroom, three bath, game room, pool, and giant kitchen - small. The windows tinted on sunny days incase humans wondered onto the property.
Life was good. Their children were happy and safe. No threats disturbed their peace of mind and that's all I, as a worried mother, could ask for.
Edward surprised her one night with a kiss. The kids were at the 'Big House' for the night and he wanted to take advantage of the fact but was now worried.
After a moment I pulled him into a deeper kiss instead of rebuffing him. It was in that moment that I realized I did love Edward.
This kind of love had a soft feeling. It was a 'I'm-not-going-anywhere' kind of love. Something I knew I could rely on for my future.
The love I felt, still feel, for Rashed will fade over time but will never go away and it was completely different to this new feeling.
Edward, Charley, and Ezra were my future and I smiled at how happy that made me.
*********THE END********
Wow it's finally over! Really sorry it took so long but at least it's finished now. I thought about doing a third book but realized I just wouldn't continue it and leave it on hiatus forever.
