Chapter 16

Three years ago

Tiger soldiers were chasing Lifty, Shifty, and their older sister, Swifty. The three were firing their weapons at them.

"It was a bad idea to make a custom-made aircraft," Shifty yelled over the gunfire. "The general didn't approve it."

"It's just up ahead!" Swifty called to her younger brothers.

They boarded their aircraft. It was the size of a small cruise ship.

Swifty turned on the engines and took off with the twins.

After an hour of flying, Lifty finally said, "We might have lost them,"

As soon as those words came out of his mouth, the aircraft was struck by a missile.

"Damn!" Swifty cried out. "We going down!"

Lifty looked at the wall where the parachutes were. There were only two.

"One of us will have to die," Swifty murmured.

"Who's going to not abandon our beloved Blackjack?" Shifty asked.

"Lifty! Shifty!" Swifty told the brothers. "I'll try to keep the aircraft in the air as long as possible. You both need to head to Happy Tree Town."

"You're going to die!" Shifty said.

"It was my idea to build the Blackjack," Swifty told him, trying to keep the aircraft running. "You two deserve better lives more than I do."

"You're the one who took care of us when our parents died!" Lifty said. "I'll stay!"

"No!" Shifty yelled at him. "I deserve to die!"

"Just go!" Swifty yelled at both of them. "We're losing altitude!"

The twins each grabbed a parachute. They looked at their loving sister.

"Farewell, sister." Shifty said. "Fly high into heaven for us."

The brothers went to the upper deck. They could see the flames on the side of the hull.

They jumped off. As they pulled their cords, they could see the Blackjack crashing into the river.

After landing, Shifty took off his favorite hat and placed it on his chest. They had a moment of silence, staring at the wreckage.

Shifty put his hat back on. "Let's tell the town what happened so we can tell the people what just happened," he said.

After telling their story, the twin thieves were shedding tears.

"Lifty. Shifty. We're sorry." Truffles said to them.

"I don't want my apology now," Handy said.

"So you see," Shifty said. "We had a dream to fly so high, we could be close to the stars. But now it's gone."

"So why not find another dream?" Flippy asked.

"Another dream?" Lifty said. "You mean, to do what they did to us?"

"Avenging your sister, yes!" Flippy replied.

"You know something, bro?" Shifty said. "This guy may have two minds, but he has a point!"

He stuck his hand to Flippy. They shook hands.

"Hooray!" Cuddle said in excitement. "We got more good guys!"

Toothy came to the group. "Splendid wants to see you guys. Immediately."

"Is he dying?" Cuddles asked.

"No," Toothy replied. "We've given him a procedure that cleansed his body from the Kryptonut and removed the bullet successfully."

They headed to the hospital.
