Flippy waited in the emergency room. He didn't sleep for days.

Splendid came in with two cups of coffee. He gave one to Flippy.

"What a war," Flippy said, sipping his drink.

"Yes," Splendid followed. "It was a bloody fight, but it's over."

Toothy came in with a clipboard. "Flippy, Flaky would like to see you."

He finished his coffee and walked in to Flaky's room. She still had on the camouflage bandana.

"Feeling better?" Flippy asked.

"Never been better," Flaky replied weakly.

"You're one heck of a lucky gal," Toothy said. "The bullet was only half an inch away from hitting your heart. Surgery went well."

The couple hugged.

Five years later

Flippy woke up and put on his uniform and sheriff badge. His wife, Flaky, kissed him goodbye while holding their daughter, Flappy. She was only months old.

Flippy decided it was too nice to drive his truck, so he walked to the station.

He passed by Disco Bear, who had a couple ladies with him. He seemed to enjoyed himself.

Cuddles and Truffles were teaching Cub how to skateboard downhill. Pops watched his son with pride.

Giggles came up to Flippy. "Hey, sheriff!" She said. "Mind coming to my diner for lunch?"

"Sure!" He said.

Handy was leading a construction site that was building a new road. Petunia kept him hydrated.

Lifty and Shifty pulled up to Flippy in their patrol car. "Howdy, sheriff!" They said, showing their deputy badges. Flippy shook both their hands. He knew the twins would keep the streets safe under their watch.

Sniffles and Toothy were headed off to the hospital. The doctors' work were never done, they'd always said.

Lammy was cutting the ribbon to her own bakery. Flippy couldn't wait to try her baking.

Mime held Ribbons' hand as they strolled in the park. They were happy to be with each other.

Russell fished in the river with other fishermen. His craving for fish was unquenchable.

Splendid and Deeka flew across the sky. They were always going to be the hometown heroes.

Lumpy, the mayor, greeted Flippy. He knew Lumpy couldn't wait for the next Edible Parade, because Lumpy always rode his float: the Giant Meatball.

Zippy was waiting for his son at the police station.

"Son," he said. "Before your mother passed, she wanted to give you this."

Zippy handed an envelope to Flippy. They hugged and Zippy walked over to where his veteran buddies were.

Flippy walked into his office and opened the envelope. In it was a letter, dated back when Flippy was only five. It read;

My dear Flippy,

I am writing this to you because you are asleep right now. Your happiness was what kept the family together. You stayed happy even when your father was deployed several times.

I must go now. You will always be my little boy. My little Green Beret.

Love now and forever more,

Mom (Mary)

P.S. Look out the window, honey.

Flippy looked outside from the open window. In the sky, he could see his mother's face, smiling down at him. Flippy waved. She waved back. Then she disappeared.

"Well," Flippy said. "I gotta get to work."
