Prologue

King Jerediah

“Sire! West county has breached our walls!” one of my watchers informed me. An unrest began in my heart, I looked towards Isabelle when suddenly she clutched my hand as the pain of contraction got too much for her to bear.

“Go! Jerediah go! The kingdom needs you more,” she gasped as she weakly tried pushing me away from her side. I was torn, as much as I wanted to be with Isabelle, I knew I had a bigger duty to attend to. I quickly knelt by her bedside when the watcher began to anxiously shift foot to foot. I grabbed her hand and softly pushed the hair away from her face.

“I will be right back. Close your eyes, when you open them, I will be once again by your side, I promise.” I kissed her hand and stood up. She bit her lip, fighting back the pain and mustered a faithful smile, tears streaking her face. The maids at her side were frantically running around prepared concoctions. She nodded and closed her eyes. I watched her for a moment before I ran out the room, a gut-wrenching feeling following me.

“What is their location?” I asked the watcher who was running to catch up behind me. I shook my head to clear it, I need to focus on what is happening now.

“They’ve breached the southern gate but our men were ready for them. The ones still around the perimeter are aiming for the northern.” I nodded, a plan forming in my head. Isabella and my sons will be safe in the West wing. I confidently walked towards the armor room, where all my warriors will likely be preparing for West County’s next attack. Guards were placed everywhere, there wasn’t a sight where they weren’t. I opened the doors to see my knights about to leave.

“King Jerediah!” One of my strongest Knights called, “You need to evacuate to your secret chamber,” He ran towards me, “West county has breached the Western wing. They had tricked us. I’ve already sent guards to Queen Isabelle and your sons, they will be fine.” A horde of knights quickly gathered around me, they started to lead me toward my chamber,

“No!” I demanded for them to stop, “Take me to the West wing immediately,”

“Sire, we-” a Knight began, I cut him off with my hand,

“That’s an order.” They silently obeyed and we quickly made our way back to Isabella. My heart was beating fast, let her be safe. When we reached there, there were battle cries coming from everywhere and the shine reflecting off of amours and colliding swords. The knights moved towards the battle after an order from me as guards took me towards the room Isabella was in. My eyes widened at the sight of the door open.

“No!” I cried and ran to the room. Inside I found a sight beyond belief. My blood ran cold as I watched the scene unravel in front of my eyes. The enemy knight penetrated her heart with his sword just as I entered. In that moment, I didn’t know what to feel, or even how to feel. I just knew I had to get rid of them. The knight yanked the sword back out, his face cruel. Isabella’s eyes were pinched closed as she screamed. Her dress covered in blood. A child’s cry piercing my ears above all.

Hate ran through and through inside me. I cried a battle cry and charged towards the knight. He hadn’t seen me coming so he died instantly and smoothly. I grabbed Isabelle as she was falling towards the ground.

“Isabella! No!” I cradled her in my arms. “Isabella, please don’t leave me.” Tears escaping my eyes. She opened her eyes,

“I didn’t.” she whispered, her palm cupping my cheek, “You said when I’ll open my eyes you’d be right there. And you are.” She smiled weakly and softly wiped my tears, “Make her proud, and give her my love.” I could barely hear her voice now. The moment was going slow, as if she herself had stopped time to tell me this, She croaked, “That’s all I ask for.”

“Arabella.” She closed her eyes, a small smile rising on her lips, when her hand went suddenly limp against my cheek.

“No.” I whispered. Rage filling me at the unfairness of it all, “No!” I cried, “Isa! You can’t leave me!” I shook her frail body in agony. I cried to the heavens, “No!” Guards stood around me, lowering their heads in respect and sadness while I cried.

In that moment, seeing my beloved on the ground, bleeding and dead, tore a part of me. It made me cold and I felt all my emotions wither into nothing. I stood up in anger and grabbed the sword still inside the cursed knight; I viciously yanked it out and ran towards the fight outside the room. The guards fled after me trying to stop me, but I turned towards them.

“You dare stop me, or I’ll shred you to pieces.” They froze in their tracks and I began my rampage. I killed everything in sight.

It went on like this for a while.

For a long while, till the war was stated over. Till it was stated our victory.

However, it wasn’t a victory the kingdom attended, it was a funeral.

I watched my wife’s coffin being lowered to ground, no feelings rising, I felt like nothing. I couldn’t feel, hear, or see. I felt numb, like a lifeless, walking body. I didn’t realize I was taken back to my chamber till a few maids entered. The one in the middle holding a roll of cloth in her arms.

“Sire, I’d like to present your daughter.” I didn’t see their faces, I didn’t see their tear streaked faces; all I saw was an abhorrent child lowered towards me, that thing that killed my wife.

“Take it away from me!” I yelled in anger. Suddenly everything was clear. It was because of that wretched thing that Isabella was caused to slow down, to stay in one room, to be unable to leave for safety. It was all because of it. It was as if its sole existence was to kill my beautiful, lovely wife.

All because of her.

“Take it away!” The maid clutched it to her chest in horror, “If I ever, ever, see its face I will kill it! She shall never present herself in front of me or the kingdom, or else the outcome will not be good for it, or you.”  The maids ran from the room, and the guards watched the King in growing anxiety and fear as the scrambled to get out of the King's chamber.

Least did they know that their fear was fueling the King.

The worst was to come.
