Forbidden Essence
Chapter 1
5 years old.
I watched Anne as she sewed my dress sleeve. I looked down at my storybook, a picture of a mother and her daughter together on a hill,
“May I ask a question Anne?” I asked, she looked up at me and smiled at my words. She taught me how to speak like a lady and dress like a lady and behave like a lady. I always did everything like she always told me to. I didn’t even leave the room.
“You may.” I always tried to please her, but she never would let me call her mother, and it was always nagging at me. I was scared.
“Are you my mother?” I asked, biting my lip, clutching my pillow. She looked up at me in shock. Her face contorted, emotions playing across her face. She watched for a few minutes, till she finally replied,
"I told you not to me ask that, ever." tears instantly blurred my vision and I turned away from her. Her voice was shaky, when she added after a few minutes of my back to her, “No, dear.”
I turned around angrily and asked, “Then who is?” Anne she shook her head, grabbing me and holding me tight to her chest. I knew she was sad, but I didn’t know why. I hugged her back even though she held me too tight. She started crying silently and I wiped her tears,
“Don’t cry Anne, I didn’t mean it.” She didn’t answer. Her warm body and the pattern of her beating heart had slowly lulled me to sleep.
10 years old.
“You can’t go!” She yelled as she reached for me. I bended out of her reach, Anne tried grabbing me again from running towards the door,
“I’m tired of this! I want to see the outside world for once!” I screamed at her, clutching her keys to my chest. The keys to my doorway to the…outside world.
“You know you can’t!” She screamed back from across the table,
“Oh really? What excuse do you have for me this time? I’m allergic to the sun?” I glared at her. She pushed back her graying hair in anger,
“It is no excuse. I’ve told you millions of times, people are after you. They want to kill you.” She glared back,
“Tell me why again?” I hissed. She glared at me so hard, she was literally shaking. If looks could kill, I would have died half an hour ago.
“Your mother killed a king.”
“Lies. All lies. Where’s my father then? Why don’t you just tell me the truth? You kidnapped me, and everyone out there is searching for me. You’re keeping me imprisoned here!” I cried, jumping on the gold plated chair and bouncing to my bed from there. She ran towards me, anger and frustration clearly showing on her face,
“Don’t be absurd!” she said reaching for me, I turned to run but my foot got entangled in the sheets and I fell on the bed, with Anne’s strong arms around my waist.
“Let me go, you witch!” I struggled, pushing and pulling at her arms but she started to laugh.
“You really think you can run away from me?” she asked and I stopped struggling. She grabbed the keys from my hands, and fastened it on her girdle. I tried hard to stop the flow of tears from escaping my eyes.
