Chapter 15 : Caught
As I walked to Edmund's study, I found myself smiling. Smiling so wide that I startled a guard standing around the corner. I ducked my head, and quickly walked past him smothering the laughter that was bubbling up.
When I woke up, for some odd reason I felt giddiness and happiness rush through me, and even as I quickly got ready, the smile stretching on my smile never wavered. As I neared the study, excitement made goosebumps appear on my arms, but I slowed down my steps. Hesitation made me bite my lip, and I squinted my eyes shut and took a long, deep breath. Oh, I knew this was wrong, but the rush of excitement and the giddiness I felt at the thought of seeing Edmund's sharp lined, and handsome face with those molten golden eyes...
I jerked myself back to reality as I faced his study, knowing that I would look like a fool staring at the door with a large smile on my face. My cheeks grew pink, and I shook my head. I cannot deny that I am undeniably attracted to him, despite his flaws.
But as much as I want, I know I cannot act upon my feelings. He knows a woman named Scarlet Woods who escaped from the kingdom of East, with a dead lover and an abusive father who was forcing her hand in marriage, not Arabella St. James.
Arabella St. James whose mother died at her birth, at the hands of the kingdom of West. Arabella, whose own father couldn't bear to look at her because he blamed her for the death of his wife, he hated her so much that he banished her from presenting herself to the kingdom.
He doesn't know Arabella, and I will not be so cruel to lead Edmund to think that the woman he is growing to admire, in the end is a lie. A big farce.
Knowing that I had to set things right, with no longer a smile on my face, I toughened myself and stepped forward. My knuckles rapped on the wood of the door with determination, even though inside I wanted to turn and dart back into my room. With silence on the other hand, my frown deepened and I knocked again, only for it to be the same answer.
I opened the door hesitantly, only to find the study empty. Remembering yesterday, I assumed he would come soon and so I set the breakfast tray on his desk and sat down on my chair. I waited for a while, wondering where Edmund is and decided that I might as well begin my work. I glanced through the letters, barely paying close attention to the seal, and found myself glancing at the door more often. It was not until the sun lowered in the sky, signifying the time for lunch that I stood up, feeling restless and made my way towards the door. It should not matter to me whether he has not come to his study, perhaps he had urgent duty. On hearing my stomach growl in hunger, I began making my way towards the kitchen. This time I was more vigilant as to not run into Francis again, dreading the moment I would.
I entered the kitchen to see that it barely had many maids bustling around, when at this time there should be. Odd, I thought, today is becoming quite boring. I sighed and made my way to the table where a few young maids sat, eating. I grabbed my lunch from the cook, and sat on the table, ignored by the whispering and giggling maids.
