Chapter 16 : Patience
I lunged at Bryce with a cry, bringing us both to the ground as I clawed at him with my strained hands. I quickly sat up, clenching my hands in a fist and hurling it towards his jaw as I screamed profanities. The intense anger running through me made me lose control, I hadn't a clue of what I was doing or saying, just that I had injure this man that I had so blindly trusted.
"Guards! Restrain her!"
A sob escaped my throat as hands clasped my arms and dragged me away. Feeling unsatisfied, I kicked ruthlessly while I was still near the bastard. He lay with his arms guarding his face, while his legs bent and pulled up to his chest. "You are a bastard, a greedy, self-engrossed, selfish bastard!" I screamed at him, and then turned to glare at the men restraining me while attempting to yank myself away, "Let me go you half brained fools!" I hissed as I scowled at Bryce murderously.
"I was pathetic to trust you again! First you nearly kill my brother, and now this? You are a low and disgusting being, do you hear me?" I screamed while I felt tears run down my face.
"Enough!" Prince Edmund demanded, his voice booming in the tower. I turned and hissed at him, continuing to struggle. He stalked towards me with murderous eyes, his gait dangerous as he neared me. I stood taller and glared right back at him, not breaking eye contact. He held my gaze for a moment before a smile began tilting his lips, a smile none too kind.
He shook his head and tutted, "This is no way a proper lady should be behaving, now is it Miss Woods? What would the tonne say?" and then his eyes lit, as he held a finger in the air, "Forgive me, my lady," he said attempting to look apologetic, "I meant Princess Arabella."
As I heard the words coming out of his mouth, the sweet mouth that had so passionately kissed me, saying the words that I had expected right from the moment I had stepped into the kingdom I felt a pang in my chest. I wanted to snap back a retort to his mocking voice and yell profanities, but instead I reigned in the fact that nothing could be done no longer, Bryce had only sped up what was bound to occur. Accepting the fact that I had admitted defeat, I stood taller, stilling my struggle and looking him right in the eye and smiled.
Just because I had failed and got caught did not mean I was about to be restrained without a fight, and damn Christopher, I didn't care if I was going to die this very moment by the hands of the man I was beginning to develop forbidden affections for, I was going to rub salt into the wound. The intensity of my anger faded till I was resolutely calm, while the prince's gaze narrowed on my smile.
"You have finally found out my secret, oh Edmund dearest." I chuckled dryly as his entire face seemed to darken, "How does it feel to have me right under your nose the entire time?" I leaned towards him, despite the guards pulling me back as if I was a rabid dog about to attack him, "How does it feel to share you affections with the daughter of the man who killed your grandmother?" I whispered, gauging a reaction from him. My voice was not mocking, I wanted to know. My answer was given when he growled, stepping threateningly close to me but not daring to touch me. As if touching me would burn him.
"You are already in a pit filled with snakes princess dearest," he mocked, "don't worsen it for yourself."
I laughed mirthlessly, "I have nothing to lose."
"Oh?" he asked, stepping back and raising an eyebrow, "Then tell me, Princess, why would your father send you as a spy? Are you so insignificant?"
