Forbidden Essence

Chapter 9 : Assume far too much

"This young lady 'ere is new to the castle, take her to the servants quarter." the guard said, but neither 'Francis' or I moved. "You 'earin' me, boy?"

We watched eachother with wide eyes, and I realized I need the upper hand in this situation or else I was doomed, bringing on my own demise. I opened my mouth to speak, but the guard beat me to it, "Francis, quit oggling the poor girl and pick yer things up already," he snickered and I gave a small smile to him. Bryce looked dazed as he kneeled down slowly, his guarded and suspicious eyes never leaving my face as he began picking up the clothes.

I kneeled down to the ginger with a grin, grabbing a whole bunch of the fabric, "Here let me help you, Francis." I made sure to say his name with more of a tilt on my voice than needed, and saw his eyes narrowing. "Might as well get started, wouldn't want to give a bad impression on my first day!" I said cheerily as his mud coloured eyes widened in disbelief.

"Sure ma'am, do as you please. Come I'll show you the way." he said just as cheerily as we both stood up, however his body was stiff and he stood straight like a pole, watching me with dislike clear in his eyes.

Why does anyone not seem to be in the favor of liking me this fine day? I thought with sarcasm.

We began walking away from the guard and I knew from the corner of his eye, he was watching my every move, and I couldn't blame him because the moment we were out of the guard's sight, I grabbed his collar and pinned him against the wall, pressing against his windpipe. All the clothes in a mess around us, flying everywhere.

"Haven't changed one bit, have you Arabella?" he wheezed out, and I flashed him a pearly white smile he had swooned at. Once.

"Me? Change?" I asked, gasping, "Now why would I change?" I batted my eyes, smiling innocently, "You know, this man I had once known told me that he likes my fiery personality, I decided I'll keep it." Bryce's eyes narrowed, and he smirked,

"Yep, not even a little bit." he muttered to himself. The glimpse I had caught of his playful side, the one I remembered from our past, quickly disappeared and the dark expression over took his features.

"Why are you here, Arabella." he ground out, his jaw clenched against my grip. I feigned innocence,

"I can't seek out the friend I had considered so dear to me?" he smirked at my words, and I slightly loosened my grip so that he could breathe,

"Considered. I am no longer your friend, Arabella. Leave." his voice was cold as he said those words. I tilted my head, the chill his voice emanated had me listen to him, for once. I remember never listening to him even when we had been children, he was far too wise for his age and I decided that listening to him would get me no childhood I had yearned. He was serious now, and I wondered for a moment what he would do if I let him go.

"Ah, Bryce, don't do this." I felt a slight pang at his words, and by the change in his cold eyes I knew he heard it in my voice.

"Look, Arabella, I don't know why you are here but obviously you're up to no good. The prince does not too kindly on intruders, it would be better if you take your bags and leave." his voice had softened, but mine had hardened,

"What if I'd rather stay?"

"Arabella, leave." He growled, his eyes flashing in anger, "And if you don't, I will do everything in my power to stop you, because I know you won't."

"You know me well, Bryce," I grinned maliciously, "too well. I doubt you forgot my promise to you that I will never be up to any good. You know how I grew up, you can connect the dots and figure out why I am here, and you also know that you cannot stop me."
