Chapter 6

Aubrey's POV

Releasing an exhausted sigh I looked down at my phone at the twelve missed calls from my mom. Since that horrible awkward dinner I haven't spoken to my parents and they haven't tried contacting me which I found strange since my mom is bit obsessive over my life but I come out of school to see my phone exploding with missed calls and voicemails.

Deleting them all I didn't even bother listening to a voicemail because I know what my mom will say. First she'll apologize and explain how she's just thinking about me than she turns the situation around so I'm somehow to blame and finally she'll be back to her old nosy self.

But I'm in no mood to go through that cycle.

I handed in my six page punishment essay today but it turns out my professor was only kidding about six pages! The old kook felt guilty that I actually did the work so he gave me extra credit. He stood there laughing as I fought the urge not to strangle him with my scarf.

Putting my phone away I decided I can call her later, as much as she pisses me off she's still my mom. Besides I'm only a block away from home.

"Ooo..." came a small voice behind me before I felt a pair of hands clutch the back of my coat pulling me down to my knees straight onto the hard concrete

To brace myself I dropped my hands to stop my face from slamming against cold, hard ground. Wincing I examined my red scratched palms from the fall.

"I'm so sorry." a short girl that looked about my age apologized

"It's okay." I said brushing at my jeans noticing that large rip on my right knee

Just great!

"I'm such a klutz I was checking my phone when some guy in a suit knocked me over and next thing I knew I was falling." she said in one breath as she stumbled up to her feet her short black hair making her pale skin stand out more

"Don't worry about it accidents happen." I said with a wave of my hand

Brushing at her clothes she lowered her head but I could have sworn I saw the corners of her lips curl upwards. No it must have just been my eyes.

This girl was very different from anybody I've seen in town, her skin was so pale it seemed a bit grey in areas, her hair short and dark barely touching her shoulders. Not to mention her large deer like blue eyes that seemed to have a slight darkness around the edges.

"Your not from around here are you."

She smiled but the corners of her mouth twitched as if she were forcing it "I'm not I'm from a small town south of colorado where business men don't push a lost tourist."

"Sometimes I think they don't notice us at all so just watch your step ..,"

"Gina." she introduced herself and stuck her hand out

"Aubrey." I said as I shook her hand noting the firm tight grip she had on my hand was slightly painful

Pulling my hand away politely I masked my aching hand, she has some strength for such a short woman. Seriously she was barely up to my chin and her featured were child like.

"Well I'll see you around Gina."

Her smile twitched again as if she was concentrating to keep it on "Yeah see ya." in too perky tone
