Chapter 19

Hunter's POV

Digging my fingers against the thick trunk I felt the wood split beneath my fingers as it poked into my skin that didn't stop me from digging them further into the tree. My body screamed for me to retract my hand but I refused and pushed it further wanting to inflict the pain I knew I deserved.

Aubrey's fearful face flashed in my head and the unbearable wave of guilt took me under its merciless grip. Growling I pushed my hand through the trunk until I saw it emerge from the other side every inch of my hand pricked with chunks of wood. Retracting my hand I shook my aching hand.

Forcing my battered body to sit on a broken tree I had knocked down a few moments ago I replayed the horrible scene again in my head.

The strength of my wolf as he slipped out in my moment of weakness, my mind was clouded and my defenses were lowered as the thirst for blood came over me in barely any time. One second I was laying on top of her ready to relive last night when he had creeped out hungry and Aubrey was his meal. Managing to pull away I wasn't expecting his quick resurface when he stalked towards her.

'Hunter s-stop.' her terrified voice repeated in my head like a shrieking banshee torturing me to near death

Clenching my fists tightly I pushed the image of her horror stricken face when I stalked towards with the same arrogant cockiness I used on what sorry sucker I stumbled on.

'Hunt!' my wolf howled eagerly

Snarling at the soulless beast I found that he wasn't the only one who wanted the thrill of a hunt, pushing the growing urge aside I pictured Aubrey.

I hurt her. I harmed my mate, the woman I love.

Gulping harshly I found it difficult to resist the self hatred coursing through my head at the short time I lost control.

What if next time I can't stop?

I shuddered at the very thought knowing I'll never put Aubrey in that position again.

My wolf growled sensing someone nearby and pulling me from my dark thoughts and ever growing guilt. Standing on my feet I released a warning growl to the intruder as it approached the secluded area I chose to release my anger.

A dark head emerged through the thick collection of low branches. She stood above me with a broad smirk as she glanced around at the damage I caused around me.

"Leave." I snarled

"But I came all this way looking for you Hunter." she said her voice holding a second meaning

Taking a few steps forward I caught the way the strange girl flinched "I said leave!"

With a shake of her head she stared up meeting my gaze with cold blue eyes. My face hardened wiping any emotion clear off her face causing her young features to age in mere seconds.

"I heard you've been looking for me so here I am alpha." she spat the last part

Taken back by what she called me, did this small she wolf not know who I am? Grazing my eyes over her petite form and back up to her cold stare I knew this little thing knew more than she let on.

"I am no alpha." I spat

One corner of her mouth lifted up weakly "Oh I know that but since the great alpha Phillip Grey died it is only right his eldest and only living child take the title."

At the mention of my father's name I felt my body tense as the last image I had of him haunted me, the regret and sadness that filled his eyes as he mouthed an apology. Clenching my fists I glared up at the unknown girl hating the reminder of my family's death.
