Chapter 25

Aubrey's POV

Scrambling backwards on all fours I tilted my head back barely dodging his snapping jaw, gasping I felt my lungs burn with every ragged breath I forced out as I processed what had just happened. Hunter attacked me, sure he missed but still he actually attacked me. Pushing the shocking revelation away I looked around for the gun spotting it more than six feet away behind the black beast, no way could I risk getting it now.

A vicious growl snapped me back to my current situation, staring back at me were a pair of ruby red narrowed slits. Fisting a hand full of the powder beneath me I flung it at his face hoping it blinded him for a few minutes as I scrambled onto my feet. Glancing over my shoulder I cursed my crappy luck when he shook his head the snow falling out of his fur.

"Crap." I mumbled and darted in between two over lapping branches

I gritted my teeth the thin twigs scratching my cheek and bare arms as I heard heavy steps behind me.

'Faster...' a voice screamed

Pumping my legs as fast as they could go I pushed my aching legs to stretch further as my lungs protested burning with every breath I forced out when I felt a sharp pain jolt through my right leg. Stumbling forward I spared a glance down at the throbbing area stunned to see two parallel bloody wounds dripping down my calf and over my ankle. That was my first mistake to look at the injured area, my stomach lurched at the metallic smell hitting my senses full on, the second was taking my attention off the ruthless wolf behind me that was now breathing down my neck literally.

With a snarl he swiped his paw at my bare legs his knife like claws scraping the back of my thigh. Biting back a cry I made the third and final mistake that sealed my fate. Sneaking a peek at my aching thigh I gasped spotting a pool of blood dripping down the inside of my leg when my foot slammed against a hard rock, suddenly the ground raced up towards my face.

With a thud I landed on my face, groaning I lifted my head feeling a pulse pounding in my temple. Pushing myself up into a sitting position I clutched my throbbing head, brushing my blond hair that feel out of it's sloppy bun aside when I noticed the sticky red liquid covering my finger tips. Skimming my fingers over the aching area on my forehead I winced when my fingers brushed a golf ball sized bump and warm liquid ran down my wrist like rain off a rooftop.

Bile rose in my throat as I glanced down at the blood stained snow beneath me, smeared on my dress, assaulting my senses. Dropping my hand a low menacing growl caught my attention but before I could glance up my body was forced back down causing my head to slam against the cold ground roughly. Squeezing my eyes shut I willed the aching in the back of my head to disappear when I felt a heavy paw push down on my shoulder as another followed on the other side.

Snapping my eyes open I couldn't help the gasp that slipped past my lips as I stared straight into those stormy burgundy eyes that seemed hallow, like the deepest depths of a fire, endless burning.

"Hunter I know your in there somewhere." I spoke in a shaky voice

His response was one I expected, a deep rumbling growl baring his deadly canines.

"Aubrey!" I heard the distant shout

In unison both the beast and I turned in the direction of the voice, uncle Matt! Beside him three light brown wolves ran forward along with my dad and Kelly not too far behind them her short hair flying around her face. One of the wolves that seemed a foot taller than the others leapt forward over a set of bushes and landing beside us.
