Mordecai and Dust continue to travel through the forest. Dust had complained a couple of times about it taking forever and that Mordecai should just fly instead. "Dude" Dust groans "If you just open your wings we could get there sooner!" Mordecai rolls his eyes and replies "Well if you stop complaining I would." Dust sighs and lays flat on his stomach on Mordecai's back. Mordecai pauses and looks up to see a large cave. It was roughly a few steps away from them. He had an idea.
"Hey, Dust. Do you think we could maybe...I don't know...explore that cave?" He asks the ferret. Dust stares at him in surprise, "Wow that's the first. Are you sure we aren't filling a death invitation if we go in there?" He asks, narrowing his eyes. The Moonlight wolf hadn't truly thought about the dangers of going into a possibly full of something cave. Dust then looks at the cave in disbelief, "Eh? Its creepy looking! However, are you more courageous then me?" He challenges. Mordecai laughs and glances up at the sky. "I'll take the challenge. After all, I have weird powers, O' mini furry one." The ferret yawns in response.
Since they left Inowa's house, the sun had set. Dust yawns again and lifts his head to gaze upon the dark shade of violet stretching across the sky. "Should we wait until its midnight to see if there will be a full moon? You can unleash your magical wolf powers" he teases. "I guess so and no. The moon does nothing to me. That's a false tale that some type of creature assumed to be true." Mordecai answers then lies down. He yawns and Dust huffs. "You were talking about me, weren't you?" He asks going back to Mordecai's answer. The Moonlight wolf sighs "Maybe I was talking about you. Maybe not. Now, let's take a nap or something before I decide to bite your face off." The silver mitt ferret gasps in shock "Oh see now that's just plain evil...okay fine."***
The sky is now a midnight black and a full glistening moon of pale white moonlight displays in the sky. Mordecai quickly gets up and looks up at the moon. He nudges Dust to wake up and receives the longest yawn yet. "Wow really. Dust that was long" he says in shock. Dust rolls to his side and asks in a raspy tone "Is there a full moon? Do you think it's possible that the moon could moon us? If it could, it would be." Mordecai stares at Dust. "I...don't know. Let's just get to exploring, the cave alright?"
Dust slowly arose to his feet, "Oh, okay guide me you steed..." He says while dragging his feet and sounding extremely loopy. Mordecai sits there and makes the weirdest face at him, "That has to be the strangest thing you have ever said to me since we met...but okay." He decides to pick up the silver mitt ferret up by the scruff and place him on his back.
They head to the mysterious cave and Mordecai stops in his tracks. His eyes were doing something strange...they were adjusting to the darkness of the cave. Then he realized something. He could see in the dark!
I didn't know wolves could do that! He thought in surprise. He had never been outside at nightfall when living on Whale Island for his primal survival instincts to kick in.
The Moonlight wolf ventures deeper into the cave. The sound of Dust's loud snoring and odd sleep talk was driving him crazy. At this rate any creature living in this cave would cover their ears and claw their eyes out in frustration.
The least thing that could happen was bats. However, Mordecai was very wrong.
A faint hissing was heard and Mordecai slowly looked up to see a pair of glowing eyes. They looked like they were staring directly into his soul. The Moonlight wolf slowly backs away.
Dust yawns and gets up. He slowly blinks and looks around. He then looks up to see a sea of vicious red glowing eyes. Then he screams. "RUN! THE BLOOD SUCKING FEINDS ARE GOING TO KILL US. THEY'RE THE VAMPIRES OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, RUN!" That was enough to make a swarm of bats chase them.
Mordecai swiftly turns around and bolts for it with the screaming ferret still...screaming his head off. The swarm of bats angrily hiss and tail behind the Mordecai.
Dust looks behind Mordecai and starts crying. "We're gonna dieeee!" Mordecai speeds up and flings himself out of the cave. The sound of hissing and the faint beating of wings had gone.
The silver mitt ferret falls off of the hybrid's back and hyperventilates. "T-they...we-almost-died-back-there-and-almost-turned-into-vampire-creatures." He says breathing heavily. Mordecai growls giving him the eye, "Dude, that snoring and screaming was the direct cause of this!" He then takes a deep breath and sighs "At least we're both still alive."
"Oh, yeah sorry...about that" Dust laughs nervously. "Promise to calm yourself if that happens again. You can trust me...I'm not a fighter for the most part..." Mordecai replies with a quiet sigh of relief.
The duo continue to travel until dawn. The sky was now a shade of pink and orange and the sun slowly arose from its slumber. Mordecai slows his walking pace. His eyes widen it surprise as a castle of some sort was getting closer in the background. They made it and he was sure of it. Home here I come!
