Chapter 7 (Haru's POV)
.
.
.

When housework comes to mind, I normally don't mind it that much. After all, I have lived and worked for myself most of my life so a little bit of extra weight shouldn't be that big of a deal, right?

Wrong, compared to the Akai-san's standards mine are as minuscule as a minnow.

Just today I had to rewash the windows three times, re-dust the furniture twice, and re-cook lunch five times. It was absolute hell.

Now as I sit in the servant's break room I rethink my previous impression of Hotaru Akai.

His once kind and gentle aura that could make even the most rabid dog tame turned into the Devil's worst nightmare times two. I couldn't help but shiver at the mere memory of his scoldings. Demons are definitely polluting the Matsuoka castle.

I want to get out of here.

"Ah, Haru?" Akai-san's voice made me jump out of the wooden I had taken refuge in.

"U-uh hello Akai-san," I bowed my head slightly, "What can I do for you?"

"King Rin would like to see you in his room,"

I felt a shiver snake it's way down my spine.

His room, eh?

"I will leave immediately," I stood up and started making my way to the exit.

"Haru?" Akai-san's voice stopped me from proceeding.

"Yes?" I replied, looking over my shoulder at Akai-san's direction.

"I-I know King Rin may seem hard to deal with and uncomfortable to be around but please, treat him with care." Akai-san placed his hands on his knees before bowing to me, "That is a request from not only a servant but a friend who treasures him,"

A friend who treasures him...

In all honesty I bet if I were to trust anyone, they would have a personality exactly like Hotaru Akai. Someone who is not only loyal but secretly emotional. That is the ideal co-worker after all. King Rin doesn't deserve such a precious friend as him.

"I will," I felt a strong wave of guilt wash over me as I lied through my teeth to the pleading man.

"But you won't, will you? After everything he's done to you," Akai-san's figure slouched even more, "I heard what happened that night,"

A sudden surge of shock left me helplessly frozen on the spot, as well as heated humiliation.

"King Rin is usually never like that," Akai-san started to shake, "He's normally the most gentle and kind person in the whole Sahara, but when something from the past returns just like that he snaps and does the most unreasonable things,"

"That still doesn't justify what he did," My hands clenched into fists as I spoke. I can't help but be unnerved.

"I know that," Akai-san's voice quivered, "I'm not trying to tell you that his actions were right but he isn't a bad guy. He's done a lot to help this kingdom and the people in it, I don't want one wrong to override all of the rights he has done. That is all."

"He helped his people, eh?" I could feel the memories of everything I have lived through cloud my better judgement, "Then why am I here?"

"Come again?" Akai-san gave me a confused look.

"Why am I here?" I repeated the question with more volume, "The original reason I came here was to help the people who have been hopelessly struggling in this kingdom."

"You can not tell me that there aren't people out there suffering. I have seen it with my own eyes. There are starving children with no family to help them, and illegal slave trades in the widespread black market, and even corruption within your own guard system. Helped people? Don't make me laugh."

When I finished a guilty satisfaction rushed through me. I had shown him the true colors of the kingdom he treasures so dearly.

It was going to happen sooner or later.

Slap.

A fiery pain escalated with my cheek as a strong force knocked itself into it.

I backed up and stared at Akai-san with shock. My cheek throbbed as I lifted a hand towards the red hand print.

"You may be right about most of those things," Warning signs popped into my head as Akai-san spoke with a dangerous tone, "But do not talk about the king's work in such a rude manor. You know nothing about he has been through and done."

"You're right I know nothing," It took the rest of my rebellious feelings to keep a strong voice, "And I don't want to,"

With that I stormed out of the room and gritted my teeth.

As if he is any more right than I am.

"Yo," A voice stopped me in my tracks.

King Rin, of all people, stood against the pane of the maid chamber's entrance. He wore a passive expression, which on my part scared me.

Could my timing be any worse?

"What are you doing here?" I tried to gather my bearings.

"You were taking too long and I got impatient," The royal sighed and grabbed my wrist, "Come on, let's go,"

"Okay," I replied.

It wasn't smart to resist him or anything else. I had to wait, I knew that. Yet, I couldn't help but yearn to break away and run.

My cheek stung from Akai-san's slap and my temper had been raised to new heights from our previous conversation.

I've had it. I don't want to do this anymore. I want safety.

I want to go home.
