Alyssa was letting me stay at her house until the divorce was finalized and Adam and I agreed on who would keep the house. Our court date got pushed back by 2 weeks and I was getting more anxious as the days went on.
It was the morning of our court date and I woke up feeling nauseous. I ran to the bathroom just in time for me to throw up in the toilet. "Shit," I thought. I never got sick, the only time I ever got sick was when I was...
Pregnant.
No, I couldn't be pregnant. Not now. I put on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt. I grabbed my purse and headed out to the pharmacy.
When I got to the pharmacy, I headed straight to the pregnancy tests. I chose one and checked out at the counter. I looked at my iPhone screen. It was already 8:30 and we had court at 11:00 AM. I started to run back to my car, when I suddenly ran into someone.
It was Adam.
I looked down at the bag that I had dropped. The pregnancy test fell out of it. Adam looked down at the test, then at me. I picked up the test along with the bag and ran to my car. "Syd wait!" Adam shouted. Before he could say anything else, I drove away.
Adam's POV
Sydney bought a pregnancy test. I know Sydney, I've been married to her for over 3 years. She wouldn't buy the test unless she really thought she was pregnant. Surely if she was pregnant this would stop her from divorcing me, right? I still loved her and I didn't want to let her go. I made a mistake and all I have wanted to do since that mistake was take it all back.
I drove home and walked into the house. I looked at all the pictures that lined the walls of our house. Pictures from our wedding, the day Emily was born, Emily on her 1st and 2nd birthday. Sydney loved to take pictures whenever she could. I missed her so much. I missed Emily too along with unborn Adalyn.
My thoughts were interrupted by my phone ringing. It was Sydney. Was she about to tell me that she didn't want a divorce? Was she about to take me back? I hope so. I answered the phone.
"Hi Syd." I said. "Hi," She said. She sounded like she had been crying. "Syd, what's wrong?" I asked her. She stayed silent. "Syd, c'mon I'm your husband. I'm here for you. Tell me what's wrong." I said. She was still silent. "Sydney, come on. You're scaring me. Talk to me please." I said.
"I'm pregnant Adam." She said and then she hung up.
I put my phone on the counter. I looked up at the photos in the family room from when Sydney was pregnant with Emily and when she was pregnant with Adalyn. She looked so beautiful. I couldn't leave her to raise this baby on her own, but did she not want me there?
I looked at the time on my phone. It was already 10:00 AM. I ran upstairs to get ready. I picked out a dark gray suit with a black tie and a white button up shirt. I put on black dress shoes and walked back downstairs. There was a text from Jesse.
Hey man, good luck in court today. Fight for Sydney. Emily and Adalyn would want you to.
I felt tears start to form around my eyes. Jesse was my best friend and was always there for me. He was going to come to court with me, but he had some family stuff to deal with. I grabbed my keys and my phone and headed to the court house.
Sydney's POV
After I hung up on Adam, I had tears streaming down my face. Could I still divorce him? I had to. He caused the accident that killed our daughters. He didn't deserve to ever see this child.
I ran upstairs and picked out a black pencil skirt with a red blazer and a black shirt underneath it. I slipped on a pair of red pumps and put my hair up into a ponytail. I looked at myself in the mirror. You could see a little bump forming on my torso. I was determined that nothing was going to happen to this child.
I walked back downstairs and grabbed my purse along with my keys and headed for the court house. On the way to court, The Man Who Never Lied came on the radio. I started to cry as the lyrics went on.
When I reached the court house, my tears were gone and I regained my composure. I walked up the steps and walked up to Alyssa.
"Hey Syd," She said. "Hi," I said. "Ok, so before we go in there, I must ask you. Is there anything that they could use against us in this case that you haven't told me about?" She asked. I stood there silently. "There is, isn't there?" She asked. "I'm pregnant." I said quietly. She stood there for a second, thinking about her response. "Alright, if Adam didn't tell his lawyer, we'll be fine." She said.
10 minutes later, we were led into court. I sat down and looked to my left. There was Adam. I could see the pain in his face. Did I have the courage to do it? After everything Adam and I have been through, could I still divorce him?
"Alright, Mrs. Levine. What is your reason for filing for divorce?" The judge asked. "My husband lied to me." I said. "Would you like to explain the situation on the stand?" She asked me. I looked at Alyssa and she nodded her head. I walked up to the stand and sat down. "Alright, explain the situation," The judge said.
"Well a while ago, my husband and I got in a car crash with our 2 year old daughter Emily and our unborn daughter Adalyn." I said. "So you were pregnant?" She asked. "Yes I was. Emily and Adalyn both died. Adam told me that a man blew a red light and crashed into us, which is what caused the crash. He lied your honor. He was the one who blew the red light, resulting in our daughters' deaths." I said. "You may go back and sit down." She said.
"Mr. Levine do you have anything to say?" She asked him. "Can I say something to her?" He asked. "If you are on the stand, I will allow it." She said. Adam walked up to the stand and looked right at me.
"Sydney, I love you. You are my wife and the mother of my children. I lied because I knew that if I told you that I blew the red light, that it would affect your recovery. You mean so much to me. You are my entire world. I love you so much. Please don't do this to us." He said before he stepped down.
I felt a tear fall down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away. "Mrs. Levine?" The judge said. "I still want the divorce your honor." I said. "Alright, I grant you the divorce. Please come up and sign the papers Mr. Levine." She said.
"No," Adam said.
"Excuse me?" She asked. "Sydney is pregnant." He said. I whipped my head around to look at him. How dare he say that. "Is that true Mrs. Levine?" She asked. "Yes," I said. "Is the child Mr. Levine's?" She asked. "Yes," I said. "And you still want the divorce?" She asked. I sat there silently.
"Yes," I said.
"Then Mr. Levine, I'm sorry. There's nothing I can do. It's her choice." She said. Adam walked up to her and signed the papers.
"Alright, you two are officially divorced." The judge said.
