I stared at the traffic ticket in my hand. Adam told me that the person who hit us blew the red light. He lied. He blew the red light and a car who had the green light, hit us. My thoughts were interrupted when Adam walked downstairs with only his towel wrapped around his waist.
"Hey babe," Adam said as he walked over to me and wrapped his arms around me from behind. I set the paper down on the counter. I pushed him away from me. "What's wrong babe?" He asked. "You lied." I said through my teeth. "What?" He said. "You lied." I said. "I don't know what you're talking about!" Adam said, raising his voice. "You know exactly what I'm talking about! You blew the fucking red light!" I screamed. "What the hell are you talking about!" He yelled. "You blew the red light that killed our fucking daughters!" I screamed as I ran upstairs. Tears started rolling down my cheeks. I ran into our room and locked the door behind me. I heard Adam run up the stairs and he started pounding on the door. "Syd, open the door!" He shouted. "You are the reason they died!" I screamed at him.
As Adam and I kept screaming at eachother, I packed all his stuff into a duffel bag and a suitcase. "Open the fucking door Sydney!" He screamed. Adam and I had never gotten into this bad of an argument. He never yelled at me because he said that he would treat his wife with respect. He also never called me Sydney. He always called me Syd.
I opened the door and threw the duffel bag and suitcase at him. "Get the fuck out of this house!" I screamed at him. "What! This is my fucking house too!" He screamed as he got closer to me. "You killed out fucking daughters!" I screamed at him. Moments later, Adam slapped me across the face. It stung and all I could do was hold onto my cheek. I fell to the ground and cried. "God Syd, I'm sorry." He said as he sat next to me. "I'm sorry Syd. I didn't mean to hit you, it was just the..." I cut him off.
"I want a divorce." I said as I got up and walked downstairs. "Excuse me?" Adam said as he followed me. I grabbed my phone and slid it into my sweatpants pocket and grabbed my purse. "I want a fucking divorce!" I screamed before I slammed the door behind me. I got in my black Range Rover and drove away. I drove to the law office of one of my good friends, Alyssa.
"Hi Lys," I said when I walked in. "Hey Syd!" She exclaimed as she ran over and hugged me. "What happened to your cheek?" She asked. "Nothing," I said. "Can we go into your office?" I asked her. "Sure," She said as she led me to an office towards the back of the building. "So, how are you and Adam doing?" She asked. "I want to divorce him." I said quietly. "What? Why? Is Adam the one who slapped you?" She asked. "About a month ago, we got into a crash and our 2 year old daughter and our unborn daughter died. Adam told me that some guy blew a red light and hit us. Turns out Adam is the one who blew the red light and when I screamed at him that he killed our daughters, he slapped me." I said. "Wow, ok, let me go get the papers." She said.
10 minutes later, she came back with papers. "Alright so I will send these divorce papers to Adam and I scheduled a court date in 2 days. Are you sure you want to do this?" She said.
"I'm sure." I said.
