Skye was glad for one thing that had changed over the past two years. Snotlout had stopped hitting on her. No matter how much she beat him up or insulted him, he considered it advanced flirting. Then one day, he just stopped. He had a massive bruise over his left eye and the second he saw her, he scuttled away like a Terrible Terror. It confused her, but she couldn't say she was sorry to see him go.
She didn't know about the events that had happened the night before. No one knew.
Because every time Hiccup saw her being seduced by Snotlout, he had to push back the feeling of envy. His fists would curl and he would snarl, yet no one noticed. Hiccup loved Skye and he was planning on saying it soon enough. He knew Skye wasn't his to keep and that she was her own person, but Snotlout didn't get the message either.
All over the island, everyone considered Skye and Hiccup partners. Whether they were a couple or not, it was like they were one person. No one voiced it or questioned it, it just happened. Snotlout never got the memo, and the night before, Hiccup cornered him and told Snotlout to back off. If Skye said no, accept it and move on.
Snotlout challenged him. Hiccup socked him in the face so hard that Snotlout was knocked unconscious. When he stirred, Hiccup told him to never make Skye uncomfortable again, or he would make life very uncomfortable for Snotlout. Hiccup looked like a raging beast and it terrified Snotlout to his bones. Hastily, he agreed and ran home and peed in fear. He moved on to Ruffnut. Fishlegs, too, chased her.Dragons were soaring through the air, specifically the dragons of the more elite riders. Maybe the Nutt twins weren't elite and Snotlout had almost no control over his stubborn Monstrous Nightmare, but they still participated. It was another dragon race that sent the villagers wild, but Skye never participated. She could flip knives and slice the stubble off a man's chin with a sword from a foot away without nicking him, but when it came to dragon riding, Skye let Sinless do whatever the dragon desired, as long as it got her to where she needed to go.
Skye had foregone the race to track down Hiccup. They jack-knifed, heading skyward, rolling and tumbling through the cloud-scapes. Skye was bound in comfortable, snug leather that Hiccup had insisted she wear to protect her body, mostly from the numerous times she had slipped off Sin's back. They soared over the vast ocean, passing by islands and sea stacks with no sign of him or Toothless. But finally, after almost forever during which Skye had leaped off Sin's back multiple times because she had grown bored and a quick stop for food, they caught sight of him on the edge of a green cliff overlooking a huge island.
His brows were knit as he drew the figure of the island on parchment, frequently bobbing his head up to make sure he had gotten it right, and Skye thought he was such a nerd that it was another reason she fell in love with him.
Sin's wings flared grandly as her feet landed on solid ground. When Skye dismounted, she was met with an eager Toothless who licked her cheek before gargling at the Skrill.
Hiccup glanced back, his eyes lighting up when he saw Skye smiling. "good afternoon, m'lady!" He greeted. "Where have you been?"
"Not winning races." She swaggered to him. "Astrid's got that bagged."
"Are you finally admitting you're a terrible dragon rider?"
"No!" She snapped as he chuckled, patting the spot beside him. Skye folded her legs underneath her, leaning against him. "The real question is: where have you been?"
Hiccup's hand froze. "Avoiding my dad."
She took the charcoal and continued mapping the area. "Oh. What happened now?"
