I sat doodling on my notes for most of the class 5th period. For some reason, I couldn’t stop drawing Sadie, Archer and I eating frozen yogurt. I concentrated all my might on getting Archer’s smile right, because no matter how many time I tried it just didn’t come out the way he does it. I slid the tip of my pen across the paper, adding layers to his shaggy hair and his signature skateboard beside him. He and Sadie stood on either side of me, all our doodle-smiles shining brightly. Archer and Sadie were drawn as stick people, while I was drawn as a circle.
Jerrold Mendes, a total Manga addict, saw my doodles and hyperlated with happiness. “You like Manga, too! Let me see!” He grabbed my notebook with his grubby hands, but when I tried to snatch it back it ended up flying across the room and into Rebecca Black’s lap.
OHMYGAWD, NO! I instantly stood up, but couldn’t bring myself to run across the room to retrieve it because I didn’t want Chase Duncan seeing me make a total fool out of myself. Rebecca put the current book she was reading down, and gazed at my drawing. Her glasses glimmered in speculation as she took the details in, and smiled slightly. She looked up and her dark eyes scanned the room until they landed on me.
She mouthed the words “Talk to me after class”, before sliding my notebook across the floor to me. I warily picked it up and slid in into my backpack, before glancing back at her.
I snapped my neck to face Jerrold with fire spurting out of my ear. I slid over to his desk with my meaty fist curled up tight, grabbed his left ear and snarled. "I'll kill you."
He flinched, and cleared his throat. "Please don't, I haven't finished reading Death Note yet." My temperature was off the roof when steam started pouring out of my nose. He smiled sheepishly and slunk back under his desk, where no doubt he prayed to his japanese gods would protect him.
Our teacher, Ms. Lucky, spotted me in the last row yanking him forward by the collar, and screamed. "What do you think you're doing Marissa?! Stop bullying that poor boy!" She stood in the middle of the classroom and pulled a nearby desk to the chalkboard. "Come to the front of the classroom now and sit here. Mr. Stevens was right about you. You should behave more like you're brother!"
I pouted, and stomped. "Are you kidding me?! Didn't you see what he did to me first! You should be punishing him not I! He's not even paying attention to you!" I pulled the manga book from his lap and waved it around while Jerrold Mendes tried to grab it back.
Her eyes twinkled, and her lips curled upward. "You're twice his size Ms. Bettgila. You would have me believe this small boy bullied you?" Ms. Lucky, being the total bitch she is, pretended to pout and stomp just to spite me. "And no, I assure you I am not kidding you."
Todd burst into hysterics. So did his girlfreind Stephanie and the rest of the cheerleader wannabes, along with Todd's bonehead buddies. By the time they were finished laughing the entire classroom erupted into laughter and I was left standing centerstage.
Crap, what about Chase? Had he seen? He wasn't sitting at his desk anymore so maybe he asked to go to the bathroom earlier when I was doodling. Nick Carter sure hadn't noticed anything. His nose was stuck in a book. Maybe if I was lucky Chase had missed it, too. But no, there he was standing at the pencil sharpener less than 7 feet away. Laughing. Oh God, no...
Chase winked at me and gave me a little wave. I swear I didn't imagine it: Chase Duncan winked at me.
Todd hooted. "Buuuurn!" And I was back to my senses in less than a second. I rushed all the way to the front of the room and the class settled down after that.
For the rest of the class I spent my time writing in my drawing Archer in my diary. I had to make his smile right no matter what it takes. I knew I was taking a huge risk but Ms.Lucky thought she got the best of me so she probably assumed I was taking notes instead.
