CHAPTER 26: RESCUE ME

An Atlanta Diner

Natalie brushed her fingers over the thin newspaper, wondering what kind of stupid things they had most likely blown out proportion that day. She loved it. Whenever she read those kinds of articles, her life always seemed to slow down and she had a small giggle about strange uses of words that journalists somehow decided to use.

She remembered one day, when she was only seventeen. She sat on the couch of the old Gilbert house, listening to Jeremy complain about her being boring because all she did was read it. After he decided to leave her alone, Stefan walked through the door. He sat down next to her and asked her about the articles she was reading. She kept pointing out the parts she found strangely amusing and she could hear him chuckle at almost everything she said. It was a fond memory of one of the only times she was able to feel normal around him.

Stefan Salvatore was never the person to cause peace and quiet inside Natalie's mind, well, maybe he used to be. But ever since that one night of passion when they decided to become offical, he seemed to make her go crazy. Whenever she looked at him she could feel her heart beat wildly in her chest. She felt dizzy, like her body was drawing her into falling in his arms. And when she finally did, every atom in her body seemed to run around in her body in some sort of panic, and she loved the feeling. He made her feel like she was a special kind of person, the kind he would fall in love with a little more in the blink of an eye. She loved that. She loved him.

Unfortunately, love makes you do crazy things, and for that, it was her sitting in a diner in Atlanta of all places. She tried to ignore the homicidal vampire sitting opposite of her, because she really wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for the fact that the person who made her go crazy was going to get his brain fried if she didn't.

She was brought of her newspaper trance when Enzo's phone made a loud ringing sound, which made her jump in her seat a bit. She sent him a glare as she saw him chuckle at her reaction. He quickly picked up the phone. "Atlanta assassination squad, how may we be of service?"

Natalie rolled her eyes as she made it painfully obvious that she was listening in, and could very easily hear Sloan's voice on the other line. "I take it you haven't located the doppelgänger yet?"

"You told us to find a nameless paramedic at the scene of a car accident in a city of freeways, fried green tomatoes and terrible drivers. It's not exactly as easy as it sounds." Enzo almost sounded as annoyed with the traveler as Natalie was. But unlike Natalie, Enzo was annoyed with her for nagging. Natalie just didn't like that she was a huge bitch.

"Which is why I'm calling... the doppelgänger's name is Tom Avery. And I just saw him deliver a patient to Atlanta Metropolitan Hospital," Sloan said.

It took a moment for the witchy bitch's words to register in Natalie's mind, but when they did, she was so pissed off she almost considered running back to that stupid place they were and punch her in the face. She grabbed the phone out of Enzo's hands without giving a warning and spoke sharply into it. "You did that stupid vision thing? I thought we had a deal. I get that doppelganger dude-"

"Tom," Sloan corrected.

"I get Tom, and make sure he doesn't disturb your evil plan and you get your filthy hands off my boyfriend's brain," she realized too late that she called Stefan her boyfriend. She glanced up at Enzo, who had his eyebrow raised at her and she quickly seemed very sheepish.

"I don't give a damn about his brain. It's his blood that matters. And until Stefan and Elena are the last two doppelgängers on Earth, their blood is useless to me. So you better believe I'll give your boyfriend a back alley lobotomy if you fail to kill Tom Avery."
