CHAPTER 46: THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL

The Door Room

Natalie had informed everyone about what had happened to Caroline, but had avoided telling them about Bonnie's return because she had promised her she could surprise them herself, especially Elena and Bonnie had hoped Caroline as well, but she had a feeling the blonde wouldn't be overcome with emotion.

"It's like she never lived here," Elena sighed, opening and closing drawers to look for something, anything that belonged to Caroline. Natalie and Elena were talking to Stefan on the phone. "How's her house?"

Stefan sounded exasperated as he spoke, and they didn't blame him. Everybody were freaking out about the thought of her going around and not feeling. The thing that made Caroline who she was happened to be what was missing- her emotions. "Totally empty, Caroline took everything but the damn doors off the hinges."

Natalie ran her fingers through her hair. "So, what's her plan? Turning it off, taking all her stuff and clothes and everything and just leave town. I know I did the same when my emotions were off, but that was only because there was vervain in the town-water-supply and I didn't feel like choking ever time I was killing someone. So, her doing this doesn't really make any sense."

"This is coming from the girl that burned her house down," Stefan teased from where the phone was on speaker. She couldn't help but let out a reluctant smile at his words, fickling with the hem of her flannel shirt.

Elena frowned for a moment, remembering the reason why she wanted to burn her house down, other than it having Jeremy's dead body inside. "Do you think she's trying to cut off all ties to her past?"

"I certainly don't think she's having a yard sale, Elena," Stefan retorted sharply, seeming like he was getting more annoyed with the other doppelganger that happened to be his ex-girlfriend with every given moment.

Elena stopped moving for a moment as she glared at the phone in Natalie's hands. She didn't think he had any right to be getting mad at her. "Okay, why are you getting mad at me? I'm not the one who did this."

He sighed. "I know. I'm sorry."

As Elena turned around with her hand to her forehead, Natalie glanced back at the door where Bonnie was slowly walking through as she nodded, telling her that the coast was clear. "Okay, look. I'm just gonna look around campus, maybe someone's seen her just let me know if you find anything, okay?"

"Alright. I will," he answered without saying a goodbye to either his ex- or current girlfriend. He then hung up, deciding that he needed to go on a big search for his best friend, hoping to find anybody who knew anything or had seen her.

Natalie walked over to the door as quietly as she could, grabbing Bonnie's arm and leading her away from where Elena could find her so it could be a greater surprise. The dark-skinned witch then sighed loudly, making the older of the twins turn around face her with wide eyes. "Looks like you could use a friend."

"Oh, my god. Bonnie?" she frowned, not sure how she could be standing right in front of her. But as Natalie and Bonnie started exchanging amused glances as they giggled at her reaction. "H-how are you-?"

"Alive?" she asked, only to get a nod as if it was obvious in return. She just shrugged, deciding that although she understood she wanted to know, she just wanted to be reunited with her best friend for a moment. "You think I'd be used to this part by now..."

Elena couldn't help but smile widely, rushing towards her resurrected best friend and wrapping her arms around her as she giggled joyfully. Natalie stood and watched them, smiling softly as she couldn't help but be overjoyed every time she looked at Bonnie again, remembering she was alive.
