"Here you go" he said, passing the papers to me. "These are the maps. There are eight levels in this place thus the eight maps. Everything is built around the ground floor which is this one"
He showed me a map labelled '0'.
"Anything above '0' is the upper levels and as you would guess anything below '0' is the basement levels".
I'm actually starting to get this place. It is so huge it must be some serious work to organise it but it does have a system. The whole thing is just on such a large scale. It's like their own little village community but all jumbled together to create a large swirling mass of people, acting as bees, buzzing around the place constantly moving, coming and going.
"Thanks" I uttered, snatching the papers out of his outstretched hand and looking over them. It was a confusing, but intricate sketch with lines representing walls which showed me the rooms, corridors and the basic shapes of the rooms emerged.
Shuffling through them I stopped at 1. There were lots of doors and lots of different rooms on that floor. A lot more than the other floor. "What's this?" I asked, genuinely curious, "What's with all the rooms?"
"That is the dorm level" Evan told me, peering over my shoulder to see the map that I was peering at. "Come on, I'll show you" he grabbed my hand again and started running, barging through the doorway and up the stairs towards the ground level.
"Why are we running?!" I exclaimed surprisingly, "It's the fastest way to get around here. I broke the hover board!" Was he joking? I have no idea.
About three minutes later we reached the first floor above ground. The hallway was long and narrow, like all the floors above ground seem to be from what I have seen of them. There were at least twenty doors along each side of the hallway, lining up like soldiers readying for battle. Evan dropped my hand but continued to strut down the hallway. I hesitantly followed, noticing the signs on the doors as I passed them. D1, D2, D3, D4, D5....
"What does the door stand for?" I ask
"Dorm 1,2,3,4,5,6... etc." Evan answered almost automatically, still moving forwards. I jog slightly to catch up with him, D13, D14, D15... I wasn't really paying attention to Evan so when he suddenly stopped I slammed into him from behind, which somehow ended up with Evan on the floor and me on top of him!I got up quickly, blushing and tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear. Chuckling Evan got up after me,
"Was there a reason for that.... umm... surprise?" he questioned.
"N-no... I umm... t-tripped" I stuttered unsurely. He looked at me.... like, straight at me. His gaze burning through my eyes, delving into something more. Eyes are the windows to the soul, they say. I kind of believe that now because the way he stares at me... It's like a brainwash, a complete pause in the pattern of time.
"Well... okay... let's go, um... see" he coughed unsurely "come on I'll show you...". He turned right to door D22 and sternly rapped on the hard wooden door.
The door opened to tall, well built man with inky black hair in a neat hair cut. Evan and this guy did the boy handshake thing and shook hands, then he remembered me. Turning towards me he introduced me, "Lilia this is Ryder. Ryder this is Lilia"
"Hey Lilia" he smiled nicely.
Evan walked in gesturing for me to follow him. Through the doorway was a very simple room, it was reasonably big and a classic square. There was a tinted window on the far wall and a bunk bed on the left wall. The bunk bed was thick and heavily wooden, like everything else in this building. The sheets were white with simple navy duvets. On top of that was a navy, red and white tartan throw and a matching cushion laying on the navy pillow. Both bunks were identical, incredibly tidy and neatly made.
On the right wall was a desk with an adjustable navy desk chair tucked perfectly under the thick wooden desk. Next to the desk on the right wall was a two person navy sofa with two tartan cushions and right in the right corner by the door was a tall thin book shelf overstuffed with books.
"So man, what bring you here then?" Ryder asked Ev,
"Well Lilia's a friend and she's new here. She's staying in umm... other rooms so I thought she would like to know what a dorm looks like, I hope you don't mind" Evan sharply countered
"Yea it's no problem, you're my boss anyway so I can't really say no can I?" Ryder replied followed by a short hearty laugh and a fist pump with Evan. After the two seemingly old friends calmed down I realised something,
"So all the dorms are like this?" I enquired, confused. How can they all be this perfect and pristine I don't know. I know I'm an OCD cleaner but that's just me, I think I liked being in control of something. Like when everything else in my life is a jumbled mess, I can control the cleanliness of my retreat otherwise known as my bedroom. Although it is a white box shell, everything has it's place and I like that structure.
Structure.
The word itself seems foreign to me, strange almost. I used to have structure years ago in the days of Sky but not now, and not after Bristol arrived, nothing was ever right after Bristol arrived.
"Yea all the dorms are like this..." Ryder answered,
"We have a tidiness policy, tidy dorm tidy mind..." Ev re-encountered,
"...And you have to do extra physical training, fitness, at 2 in the morning for an hour if your dorm isn't tidy!" Ryder finished. He looked smug. Like he just won an argument.
"Yea fine whatever" Evan mumbled, crossing his arms and turning away.
Brrrriiiinng. Brrrrrrrriiiinng.
Ryder jogged over to the bunk bed and grabbed a phone off of the top bunk, placing it to his ear,
"hi--yea--oh god sorry!-- I'll be right there!"
After he set his phone down he turned back to us. "I've got to run! I'm so sorry! I'll be back soon enough. An hour at most. Please stay- I would really like to catch up later. I've got to go! Sorry!" and with that he dashed out of the door.
With a slam me and Evan were left alone. And we had an hour, alone, in a dorm room...
What's the worst that can happen?
And what's the best?
