Nick

I started to open my eyes when I heard a sob & realized it was Demi & that I wasn't dreaming it. At first, I thought I actually was dreaming, since everything was foggy & my head felt funny. This is usually what happened, though, when I'd take an Ambien. I moved my head, even though, it felt like it weighed a hundred pounds & saw Demi crying as she looked at her phone. I reached up, with my hand, to rub my eyes since I couldn't see anything clearly. Demi jumped, then sucked in her breath. "Oh my God! Nick!" She gasped, dropping her phone beside me. Her hand went to the side of my face. "Can you hear me?" She shouted in my face, making me wince. "How many pills did you take, Nick?"

I moved my head to get away from her hand & moved up on the bed a little. "Stop screaming at me." I shook my head, slightly, still feeling groggy.

"I'm sorry, Nick, but I need to know how many pills you took. Did you drink wine after taking the Ambien?" Demi asked, her voice shaking.

"What are you talking about?" I squinted at her, since even the tiny light from the bathroom was too much for my eyes.

"You took Ambien. How many, Nick?"

"I took one."

"Really? You only took one?" Demi leaned back, her eyes wide with surprise, but she let out a relieved breath.

I leaned my head back on the headboard & closed my eyes, letting out a sigh. The confusion started to fade & I realized what Demi thought happened. She'd been crying. She was about to call 911. She was freaking out. She was yelling at me. She asked me how many I took & if I had drank wine. My eyes snapped open as I pushed myself up. "You thought I tried to kill myself?"

She just stared at me, then her head nodded, ever so slightly. "NIck, I couldn't wake you up & I saw the bottle."

"When I take those things, I'm out. You know that. I didn't drink any wine. That glass is from a few days ago. I'm sorry you were worried. I only took one, I swear. It was my last one, actually. I took it because I wanted to actually get some sleep instead of lying awake thinking about how my marriage is over." I leaned back on the headboard again, since I was still lightheaded. "What are you doing here anyway? I thought you went home to Texas. Did you forget something?"

"I did. I forgot that I made a promise to you. I forgot that you're the world to me & I know you didn't cheat on me. I forgot, for a moment, that I am your wife & my job is to love & support you & stand beside you through the good & the bad." Demi's voice was shaking as the tears continued to cascade down her cheek.

"You believe me?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"Yes. I'm sorry I doubted you. I shouldn't have acted the way I did, over the last several days. I know you were hurting & I was shutting you out & making you feel worse. I know that's why you weren't trying to talk to me."

"I wasn't talking to you because I didn't know what to say to make you believe me. I was also pretty fucking bummed & didn't give much of a fuck." I held out my hand & she put hers in it. "But, I'm glad you believe me now. I would never cheat on you, Demi. I mean that with every ounce of my being."

Demi's chin began to tremble as she climbed on my lap & wrapped her arms around my neck. She let out a soft sob when my arms went around her, squeezing her as hard as I could, which wasn't very hard, honestly. My body was still weak from the Ambien, so my strength wasn't what it should be. "I love you, so much. Don't scare me like that again."

"I didn't mean to scare you." I said & Demi let go of me to look at my face.

"Maybe not, but you have no idea how scary that was. For a few minutes, I thought you had..." Her voice trailed off.
