Chapter 6
Cassie P.O.V
Today was Friday, and my mom was making me go to school. The school called and warned her that too many unexcused absences could lead to a court fine. At the words 'court fine', my mom had ended the call, and banged on my door to tell me that whether I like or not, I was going to school today.
So here I was wearing my favorite skinny jeans and cowboy boots with a plain white shirt, waiting for the bus in the rain. I was not completely drenched but my Algebra 2 spiral was. It had been substituted as an umbrella for a while now. The weather in South Texas sucked and reminded me of a bipolar, stuck up drama queen.
Finally, the sounds of a bus began nearing and I almost squealed in excitement. I was finally going to be under a roof! I was finally going to have an escape from these tiny, wet monsters that grouped up and decided to attack me. The bus almost passed me, stopping a good fifteen feet away from me, and I was forced to walk through puddles and mud.
Squish! Splash! Squish!
The noises of my boots, passing through mud and puddles surrounded my ears and left me as I entered the bus. I walked to the back, passing rows of empty seats. It seemed like everyone had decided to get a ride to school instead of taking the bus. I silently cursed my mom for having to take the early shift in her job.
I took a seat, and evaluated myself. My terribly plain outfit had become even more terrible. Mud was splattered all over my treasured boots, and my favorite jeans were soaked. I let out a frustrated sigh and thought myself. Another wardrobe malfunction.
Suddenly, I heard a thump on the seat next to me, and I heard a familiar voice say, "Nice weather we're having, huh? Clear skies, sunny day, and birds are chirping."
I flinched as I recognized who it was. Apparently, the bus wasn't as vacant as I thought. Zachary stared at me from the seat next to me with a smug expression. He was wearing a blue hoodie and black Levi pants. There was not a single drop of rain in his whole outfit. He was completely dry... and holding an umbrella.
I ignored him, and attempted to salvage my Algebra 2 spiral. The pages were soggy and the writing on it was almost unrecognisable.
There was a thump right next to me, and, sure enough, Zachary was sitting next to me. His knee touched mine, and I scooted over so that there was space in between us. Still, I ignored him, and he seemed okay with it.
We sat in silence for a while (our school was far), until I started shivering. It was just so cold, and my now damp clothing clinged to my skin and attracted the cold. At first my shivering was barely noticeable, until I started sneezing.
"You can have my hoodie," Zachary spoke up.
"No, I don't need it," I protested, but I sneezed in the end of my sentence, and he wasn't convinced.
"Take it. You're obviously freezing and I'm obviously not," he insisted. I looked at him suspiciously. He looked so sincere, that it made me wonder if I can conjured up what happened in the woods.
"I don't have cooties or anything. Promise," he added with an amused grin, and it made me flush with embarrassment.
"Fine," I gave in, and he took his hoodie off, and handed it to me. I put it on quickly almost as if he would change his mind.
"Thanks," I said, and I thought I saw him smile.
It smelt good, I was displeased to admit. Like peppermint and just the right amount of cologne. Not like the guys who bathe themselves in it, so that when you walked past them it was a rollercoaster of gagging.
"Blue's nice color on you," Zachary said, scaring out of my thoughts. I didn't say anything, merely nodded.
"Look, Cass-" he started but I cut him off.
"Its Cassandra," I snapped. Only my friends called me Cassie, and after what happened, Zachary was not my friend.
His face fell, and he let out a sigh. He looked so sad, that it made me almost take back my words. They had really hurt him.
"Look, Cassandra. We need to talk about-" he started again but I cut him off again.
"There's nothing to talk about! You obviou-," I started, but Zachary covered my mouth with his hand. I tried to pry his hand of my mouth, but he took both of my hands in his other.
"Not fun getting interrupted. Is it?" he asked, but I didn't answer. I was too busy stomping my feet to get the bus driver's attention. But my hard work was pointless, the bus driver appeared to be wearing earphones. I could see his head bobbing back and forth to the beat of the music. Man, was I going to write such a letter to the board of transportation.
Finally, I gave up, and looked up to see a very amused Zachary staring at me. A smile was playing in the corner of his lips and at the sight of it, I frowned.
"Are you going to listen to me now?" he asked. I nodded like a good little school girl.
"Okay, now. What was I saying? Oh, yeah. We have to talk about what happened. I don't know what- OW!" he yelled and quickly removed his hands.
"Why did you bite me?" he asked. I shrugged and gave one of my best innocent faces.
"I don't know where your hand's been," I answered.
"Says the girl who just bit it!"
"Oh. Does the big baby want me to kiss his booboo?" I asked, making my best baby voice. Zachary looked as if he were thinking, and seemed to make up his mind.
"As a matter of fact, yes. Yes, I do," he answered, extending his hand. I pushed his hand away in disgust.
"We're getting off topic here," I snapped.
"Okay, what I was saying-" he started, but he was cut off again.
"WE'RE HERE!" the bus driver yelled, and both of us lurched forward as the bus went to an immediate halt.
"Are you going to want your hoodie back?" I asked him.
"Nah, your white shirt isn't exactly unsee-through. If you know what I mean," he said, adding a wink, and I felt my face go red as I remembered what color of bra I was wearing.
"Well, thanks. For the hoodie, I mean," I hastily said, and I ran out of the bus before he could say anything.
On my way out, I distinctively heard the screeching of metallica coming from the bus drivers earphone in full volume. Go figure.
I ran to my first period class, bumping into very annoyed people. I wanted to escape Zachary just in case he was following in me, but I bumped into someone, and we both went down.
"Watch we're your going," a girly voice snapped, but she sounded like she had just been crying. I looked up and in front of me was one of the last people I wanted to see today...or ever. It was Maria. Go figure.
Her eyes were red from crying, she had dark circles under her eyes from what I guess was lack of sleep, and mascara was running down her cheeks. All in all, Maria did not seem like a morning person.
"S-s-sorry," I said.
"That's okay. I guess I should've been watching where I was going too," she said, and attempted a smile, but it looked more like a plea for help. With that, she stood up, and walked off.
I watched her as she walked. Her perfect hips rocked back and forth, her designer heels clicked as she touched the floor, and her beautiful hair swung back and forth as she walked down the hallway. She put on this mask of perfection, but I had gotten a glimpse of the real her. She was a broken China doll. She was no different than I was.
