Chapter 7
Josh P.O.V
Today was the day. I was certain of that. Today was the day I was going to. Tell Maria I loved her I was going to do it in the hopes of restoring our relationship to the way it was, and I just thought we were in that stage already. Plus, maybe the dreams would stop too.
I waited for Maria to come out of her reading class, so that we could head to lunch together. These past days, she had completely ditched me to go to the library for homework, but I had the same teachers that she did and there hadn't been homework for a week.
The bell rang and the door automatically flew open. Twenty to thirty bodies ran out the classroom. I saw Maria and I was about to call out to her, when I saw Mrs. Faerow stop her.
"Miss Rios, would you be kind enough to lock up after everyone leaves? I have to leave immediately and you're the only I trust out of these hooligans," I heard Mrs. Faerow ask Maria. Her shrilly, ear-piercing voice carrying out to where I was.
"Of course, ma'am," Maria quickly said, and then added, "You can count on me, and I hope everything's alright," but Mrs. Faerow was already out the door.
The hallway cleared, and Maria was able to notice me. Her eyes widened surprised and the v appeared. Immediately, she looked down and started fidgeting with her hands. It was obvious she was nervous about something.
"Maria!" I called out to her and walked to her, picking her up and swinging her around before putting her down.
"Josh!" Maria called, but her voice sounded without expression.
"What's wrong?" I asked concerned. She didn't look up, instead she continued to fidget with her hands even more.
"Um, Josh... We, um, need to talk."
Her tone caught my attention. Instinctively, I reached out for her and lifted her head to see her face better.
She was crying. Tears and mascara were streaming down her face. Her eyes were red, almost as if she had been crying before. Seeing her this way, broke my heart.
Sure, I had seen cry before. Correct that, I had seen her cry a lot before. I had seen her cry in movies, when the rebellious, teenage daughter found out her dad had cancer(The Last Song) or when the guy returns from the army in hopes of being with his loved one, only to find out she has married someone else (Dear John). I had seen her cry during one of those pet adoption commercials came out showing all the lonely dogs. I had even seen her cry when she received an award, but this was a different kind of crying. This was the type of crying that showed something was not at all right.
"Oh, okay. We can talk in my car," I said quickly, wanting--no, needing to know what was wrong. My primary reason for wanting to talk to her forgotten for now. My main and only concern to help my girlfriend in anything she needed.
"No. Its too far. We need to talk now. Let's just talk in here," she suggested, entering Mrs. Faerow's classroom. I frowned worriedly, but followed her inside the classroom.
Maria sat on one of the desks in the front row, then stood up, and sat down again, only to stand up again. Whatever was in her mind was really bugging her.
"Maria, what's wrong?" I asked for the billionth time, and tried to pull her into my arms. She pushed me away, and the sickening feeling that he wasn't going to come out of this room the same again.
