Chapter 11: Code 6

"So have you two been enjoying your time here?" Nina asked the two girls at breakfast the next morning. All the other, students I guess you could call them, ate in the secret kitchen but Nina and her family ate together in either the normal kitchen or the secret kitchen when everyone else was done.

"Oh ya Mikey's been enjoying her time here that's for sure. " Ari said under her breath, while poking her sister in the side.

"Shh!" Mikey hissed at her sister.

"What do you mean?" Nina asked. "Is something going on that I don't know about?"

"Oh not really, I'm just having a great time here with you. And learning how to use my powers is so amazing." Mikey answered.

"Well i'm so happy to hear that you two are enjoying yourself here. Once you two learn to use your powers really well then maybe you can use them to help us save other girls and boys just like you."

Mikey and Ari shared a look. "We would really enjoy that." Ari finally said to her Grandma with a smile.

"I know i'm gone a lot and we don't really get very much time to hang out and actually get to know each other, but in a little while it will all be worthwhile and all three of us can spend time together all the time." Nina stated.

"What would change so we could spend more time together?" Mikey wondered aloud.

"Well there are many ways. I could blow up his home base, which wouldn't be a good idea because a lot of people would die, or I could retire, or, here's the big kicker, I could try to convince him he's wrong and not all people that don't have strictly human genes have to be killed. But there is plenty of time to decide which one." She laughed.

Mikey and Ari both exchanged glances of uneasiness.

"Nina?" Triss came running in sounding as though she was out of breath. "We have a situation."

Nina stood, looking once again like the strict, in charge, lady the two sisters had forgotten about for the moment. "What's wrong?"

"We've got a code 6." Triss responded with a frightened look in her eyes.

"What's going on?" Ari asked, fully aware of the tension that just swept the room. "What's a code 6?"

The look on Nina's face made the room grow silent. "We judge things on how bad they are on a scale from one to ten. A two means we have a problem but it shouldn't be hard to handle. A four means it's a little tougher but we will be alright we just need to put forth a little for effort. A six means we might have some real trouble and the best we have need to get ready now. A eight or above is when we get ready for the word from me to pack up everything and hurry and get out before they get us. We are at a six. Which means Triss, myself, Kevin, and a few other people need to go and fix whatever is wrong. But don't worry we'll be right back and it's nothing to worry about. Just continue your studies and finish eating we'll be back in a bit." And with that Nina hugged each girl and walked out the door talking to Triss about what they needed to do.

Kevin turned to follow behind them in the doorway but turned around quickly and hurrying to Mikey, hugged her, and whispered in her ear. "It'll be ok don't worry. We'll be right back." With that he hurried after Nina and his sister.

"I see you two are getting closer." Ari said after the two girls stood there for a few minutes in an awkward silence.

Mikey rolled her eyes.

"Just trying to lighten the mood." Ari said. "Wanna head back to the room?"

"No thanks, I think i'll go to the exercise room for a little bit. I'm a little worried about Kevin and working out will help me forget, and I can try to practice controlling my powers."
