Chapter Diez

Her eyelids opened slowly to a small orange glow upon her wall. Was it morning already? No that couldn't be right, it was only... She clicked the power button on her phone... 6:30?

"Ugh," she groaned. It was so early and she hadn't even slept that long. And if the curtains were still drawn then where was that damn light coming from?

Faint scratching came from behind her causing her to flip over onto her side. What in the balls...? The brightness of her desk lamp blinded her at first, but her pupils soon adjusted. It was only Cain. He was hunched over her desk, shirt off, scribbling away on a piece of paper.

"You're not fuckin' human," she muttered, pulling a pillow over her face. "Why are you up so early?"

Cain lifted the pillow, letting the light once again fuck with her eyes, and held up what he had been working on. It was a very detailed drawing of her as an actual penis with a word bubble hanging above her head that said: "I'm just dickin' around!"

"I felt inspired."

"Aha ahaaaa... Give me that!" She snapped, trying to snatch the paper from between his fingers. He smoothly dodged her reach and held it out of her grasp.

"Nope I think I may want to frame this."

"You better not!"

"I bet the family will just love this when Thanksgiving comes around. You'll all be sitting at the table waiting for turkey, and there you'll be, forever immortalized as a giant cock."

She knew it was too good to be true. It was middle school all over again.
She was already drowning in largely suppressed past memories.

"Hey, hey," Cain said, bringing her back to the present. "you know I'm just kidding, right?" He suddenly ripped the paper in half, balled up the pieces and tossed them into the trash. "There. All gone. See? It was just a dumb joke. Breathe."

And she did, but not without uncurling her middle finger first. He laughed. "You never liked my jokes."

"Only because you made me the goddamn joke, Cain."

That silenced him.

"Whatever, it doesn't matter." Rian rose from her bed and pushed past him. "I have work at nine anyway."

She departed from the room, leaving him in his quiet shame.

When Rian had gotten home at 1:30, Cain was already gone. Her heart sank deeper than she could bear at the sight of her blankets, neatly folded and cold, on her bed. She hadn't done what she needed to do and now she was alone. The next two weeks drifted by, stale and pointless, with no word from Cain.

"What are you doing?"

"Leave me malone."

"Terrible puns? What's up? I thought you didn't drink anymore."

"I don't."

"Then what's that?"

She looked down and saw the vodka bottle nestled in her lap, half of it already gone. "Oh. That."

"Yeah. That." Channa replied, her no nonsense voice coming in to play. "Unlock the door."

Rian sat there, expressionless and unmoving.

Channa's voice was softer this time, "Open the door, Rian."

A slow minute passed before she actually did, but once that happened, Channa didn't waste any time. She quickly slipped into the passenger seat, and immediately took in the dreary mess that was her best friend. "Your parents have been calling. They even called me to make sure you were still alive."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't worry, I told them you were okay. But... are you?"

"Yeah..." Rian said, a tear slipping from her eye.

"It's okay nips," Channa soothed, easing the bottle off of her lap and gently poured it out the window, "let's get you inside, alright?"

Rian nodded solemnly. Channa then proceeded to shut off the car engine. Rian only sat and stared, blankly. She was shifting back into her old ways. That couldn't happen. Not again.

Wow. This is why you don't write when you're sick. Sorry for depressing up your day, but I only write what I feel. Hopefully, it'll be cheerier next time!
