"Mike, tell me. No lies. No waiting. No stalling. Tell me. What's happening?" I asked. "Drugs is happening." He blurted out, but slammed his palm in his face when he saw the tears that he brung to my eyes.
"I'm so sorry! I'll return the Mary Jane, I'll return it, or even go to jail. Just... Don't bring up your brother-" I stopped him, tears streaming down his face.
"Shut up, Mike. Give it here." I placed my palm in his vision. Hoping I was gonna throw it out and forget the past, he handed the drug to me, the smell making us both cover our noses. "Give me the dang lighter, Mike." I said, him dropping it in my hand.
I wasn't too unfamiliar with this. I've seen a cigarette, my dad used to smoke. But this was different. It was heavier. It looked like the perfect thing to light and take a drag out of.
You see, I've always been tempted. When I was 11, I'd seen it enough times to even count. My dad's addiction was cigarettes, and in a way, it was mine too. I'd always want to be around him when he had one. I loved the smell.
Unusual, I know.
Mom always tried to make him stop, but he couldn't. One day, my parents left to go see a therapist to get rid of his addiction.
So, when my brother left to play outside with his other 12 year old friends, I decided I wanted to try it. Not a cigarette, but I wanted to light something and have it like my father always had.
So, I got a crayon and lit it up, put it in my mouth, and acted like my dad. Well, that's when I choked on crayon, and had a visit with the hospital when Kyle found me.
But ever since then, I've still wanted to try it. And now that I'm older, I've always wanted to try the actual thing.
So without thinking for another second, I lit my new addiction.
