When Hailey and I were eleven, we had a tiny little adventure. Hail didn't want to just sit inside our house all day, and we started to fantasize about being a teenager. We wanted to grow up so we could have more freedom. They saw us as little girls, and we wanted to be like Kyle and his seventh grade girlfriend at the time. But no, we were too young.
I was practically fine with being a child, but Hail just couldn't wait so she decided to detach the latch on the screen for my window, and climb in the roof.
When our butts got uncomfortable, we went back inside to get bean bag chairs to sit on.
I had to admit, it was more fun than I'd had in a while.
"So this is your way out?" Hailey asked me. "What?" I asked. "We did it for ya! When we're teens, this is our secret way out." She said, but I just smiled, looking at the distance from my bedroom to the first story ground.
After this, we explored around the house, looking for places to explore when we got older.
I convinced her that we should start our expedition now, so we swiftly made it down by jumping on tires and sliding.
Dad and Mom left to go grocery shopping, (courtesy to them still being together) and left us on our own. So, while Kyle went to middle school and our elementary school was on break, we left the house and traveled miles of distance.
There was a few suspicious adults, but we kept on roaming Kalamazoo.
Finally, we'd made our way to the Kalamazoo River, quite a pleasure it was.
I pushed her in, but she dragged me with her. We swam miles from the nearest people, and we found our way to forest-like grounds, where we'd never seen people before.
We traveled and traveled, until we were in the middle of the woods. We found a crest of water, and underwater, it lead to the river.
Overtime, we built a little fort and declared we'd tell absolutely positively no one.
So we traveled here every week after school, until we eventually forgot. But I still remembered, and so did she.
The Crest.
___________I set my phone down on the desk, also known as the only furniture in the room, knowing we'd get wet if anything.
As I was shutting the door and turning to go downstairs, I bumped into another girl, around my age. I noticed that the music had stopped, and the second door in the hall was open, therefore leading me to think this was the crazy fan girl.
"Ew, who are you?" She was chewing on a wildly scented bubble gum. "Um, your roommate." I replied, smiling. "Ha ha. Very funny." She sarcastically responded. "Just like your rats nest." I pointed at her not-tamed blonde hair. "Shut up, brat. I mean, why are you even here? To clean?" She asked, referring to the hospital gown I forgot I had been dressed in.
"So, I see you've met Rebecca." Jack came upstairs. "Oh no. You again. What did I say about-" I started, but his stern look made me feel weak. "That's no way to talk to your stepdad." He crossed his arms. "Ya, and you'll only ever be that to me; A stepdad." I crossed my arms. "So you're that rebellious teen that cut herself too deep." Blondie laughed.
"Ugh, I can't take the blondness anymore!" I half-shouted as I walked down the staircase, escaping the captivating hallway.
I had notes now. Rebecca is the annoying blonde. The little boy was the rude annoying blonde. Jack is the worst rude annoying blonde I was forced to live with. What a day!
But I was still clueless of where Kyle was, but I quite frankly didn't want to see him with Mike ever again.
All of this was going through my head as I arrived the forest near the riverbed to meet Hailey.
I hadn't told Mom I was leaving because she was probably gonna force me to stay for Thanksgiving dinner.
I cut through the vines that had formed over the years Hail and I hadn't been here. I finally made it though.
I wasn't alone, though.
I met with a girl with red dye at the ends of her hair, a crop top, and a high-waisted skirt tight around her waist. Not to mention big glasses around her small framed face.
"Hailey?" I asked.
"No. I'm dead. This- Your... Dead." She looked paler then before she laid her eyes upon me. She sat up from the crest and stood, hands on her face.
"I made it." I said, but before I realized Hailey wasn't the nicest fish in the sea, a slap was sent flying to my cheek. Then, she pulled me in for a tight hug.
"You left me, Mo! You- I..... This isn't real! Montana left..." She cried. "I know. I'm sorry," I hugged her. "You better be!" She wiped her tears, and I realized that she was just the way I remembered.
*******
"So what's up with the glasses and Kool-Aid dyed hair?" I asked. "I've changed. Everyone's changed. Including your brother." She said.
"What do you mean?" I asked, it was around 7pm. "I mean, we started dating three months ago." She smiled. "Well... This is awkward..." I replied, but she frowned. "I'm still glad, Hail." I smiled and soon, she did too.
"But recently, he disappeared. No word, no nothing. He was just... Not the same. When you... Left us, he wasn't the same. But he kept a smile for me. When things got stranger then they'd ever been, he suddenly just left, and no one knew why." She said.
I felt like part of my heart was missing.
Kyle Hyland disappeared from my grasp just as I started to lose it.
