"Oh really?" I ask.
"Yes. I'm so sorry." She says, holding out the rose to me. I sigh, taking the rose, and my ears tear up. I smile, and I start crying harder.
"Lila..." I say.
"Yes?"
"I need to talk to you." I say between sobs. She nods, and guides me over to the table with lit candles. She sits across from me, and I lay the rose softly onto the table. I close my eyes, calming myself, even though my breath is shaky.
"What is it?" She asks, her voice coated in worry.
"I went to the doctor the other day."
"And?"
"You know how I've been really emotional and confused a lot? Like I can't make decisions clearly?" I ask.
"Yes. So?"
"The doctor said...." My voice trails off. I take in a deep breath, and I close my eyes, letting more tears fall. "I have cancer." Lila gasps, and I open my eyes, to see her crying.
"What kind? Breast? Ovary?" She asks, and I shake my head no.
"Skin." I say.
"Skin cancer? Is there a cure for that?" Lila asks, shakily.
"Yes, there's a surgery, but it cost a lot."
"How much?" She asks. Her voice shaking.
"Nine grand." I say, wiping my tears.
"Okay." She says.
"I don't want to hold you down with my illness. So, I'm just going to leave. Thank you though." I stand up, leaving the rose, and walking slowly to my car.
"Wait." Lila says, I turn to look at her tear stained face.
"Yes?"
"We'll do this together." She says.
"I'm not holding you down like that." I respond, choking a little.
"I love you, Jasmine. I'm not letting you go. Please, we will get the money together, and we can get you the surgery. And we can stay together." She says, her voice hopeful, and her eyes pleading.
"I'm going to hurt you if we do this."
"You're worth the pain." She says back, making my cry again. I nod, and cover my face with my hands. I feel her arms wrap me into a hug, and my body goes weak. I lean into her arms, sobbing. A few minutes later, I pull away, wiping my face.
"Lila?" I ask.
"Yes?"
"Be mine?"
"Forever, till death do us part."
