I've heard that word so many times

But I can't figure out what it means

I hear people whisper it in the halls

Like an insult, a curse, a poison

Why does that kid talk like that?

He's not normal, they say

Is normal a new thing

Is everyone normal?

Normal...

I feel its teeth against my ear

Waiting for the perfect time to bite

Normal

I hear people mutter it everyday

But it tastes all the same

What is normal?

Is it the girl who threw up in the bathroom

Who coughed out the seeds of cigarette smoke

Is it the boy in the hallway

Whose glasses frames are lopsided

From the kid beating him up

Is it the nasty string of slimy words

Thrown around like empty pots

Hitting a stranger in the head

Fat, gross, ugly, fag

Is that normal?

I don't think that is

I wish I was right

But the world frightens me

And its definition of 'normal'
