I wake up to a sun ray of light coming from my window. I yawn and stretch out my legs and arms. I get up and get ready for practice.
Father has always been delighted he had a son. He always wanted a prince, to go hunt with the other knights, bask in glory, and go sword-fighting which is where I was going now. Every morning I would go and practice sword fighting with him. I rub my eyes and run my fingers through my hair as I walk into the accustomed room I always went to. "Phil! I have great news!" Father says, and gives me a bear hug. "What is it?" I ask confused. "I am going off to Mayfare! Where I will be searching for your future wife!" he says, excitedly. I rolled my eyes. I hated the idea of not being able to choose who I wanted to marry, but I had no one in particular I liked, so I kept quiet. "So, I'll be gone for a few days, but I have someone that will help you with your sword fighting." He says, proudly. "He's from the town. He's the best sword fighter in town, we would love him as a knight. I've begged him for years, but he refuses to join. We really need a chap like him, what a shame. Anyways! I should be going now, I'll be back in a couple of days." He says, as he walks out of the room. I stand there in silence, not sure what to do. I bite my lip and decide to try out some new techniques. I pick up my sword and start slashing it in different direction. "Not bad." I hear a voice come from behind me. I turn around and face a boy with chocolate brown hair and a smirk. He was a bit taller than me, but seemed a few years youngers. He then greeted me with a warm smile. "Oh, um. I didn't know you arrived." I say embarrassed. "Oh, yeah. Sorry mate. By the way my name's Dan." He says, and shakes my hand. "I'm-" I start, but he quickly interrupts me. "Phil, yes I know. You're the prince of Careway, the girls can't stop talking about you." Phil chuckles. I smile. I liked him, there was just something about him that made him so relaxing. "Let's begin!" he says, as he holds up his sword. He quickly strikes at me, but I defend myself with my sword. We start to battle, and my disability of handling a sword showed. He had me on the ground in a few minutes with my sword at the other side of the room. His sword pointed to my neck and him smiling down at me. I couldn't help but notice how his eyes twinkled when he smiled. He points his sword away from me and helps me up. "I guess we have some work to do." he says. For the next few hours, we're battling it out, but with the same conclusion every time. "You're getting better." Dan says, as he helps me up, for what seems like the hundredth time. "Augh! I can't do this! I don't even want to be king!" I yell. I put my face in my hands, wishing I was anywhere but here. "Hey," Dan says, and places a friendly hand on my shoulder. "I know you don't really know me, but do you want to talk about it?" he asks. I hesitate, but he had such a calming nature, that I nodded. "Are you hungry? We could go and get some breakfast and talk." I say, gesturing toward the door. "Yeah, sure." he says, and puts his sword away. I lead him to the kitchen. "Oh, you're majesty! Here's your breakfast." Miss. Allen, our cook says. "Oh thanks. Do you think you have anything for Dan?" I ask. "You're lucky, I decided to make extra young man." she says, and gets another plate. She hands the plate to Dan. "Thank you." he smiles. She looks him up and down and smiles. "Well, don't you just look cute together." she gushed. My face reddens and I give Miss. Allen a look. I quickly drive Dan away from the kitchen. As we walk up the stairs of castle Dan turns to me. "I like her." he smiles. We finally reach my room and I take a seat on my bed. "Wow." Dan says as he admires my room. He plops next to me, still looking around. "Do you like it?" I giggle. "Yeah, it's just so big! That's what she said!" Dan yell, laughing. I give him a slight shove and take a bite of my eggs. "Do you play piano?" Dan asks, pointing to the piano in the corner of my room. "No, Father thinks it's a waste of time." I sigh. "I could teach you." the brown-eyed boy answered. "Yeah, that would be cool." I say. We put down our food and walk over to the piano. I sit down on the bench, as he stands behind me. He guides my hands onto the keys. "So, this is G, this is A, B, middle C-" he said, playing each note as we went along. I practiced playing the notes, and looked up at him. "You're pretty good. Wanna learn a song?" He asks. "Sure," I shrug. But this time he sits directly behind me, sharing the bench. His long legs were around mine, and his chest against my back. He placed his hands over mine, and showed me which key to play. "Now you go back to middle C..." He whispered in my ear, which led shivers down my spine. I could feel my face getting hot and my pulse quickening. I bit my lip, hoping he wouldn't notice.
After a while, we stopped and decided to go outside for a bit. "So, where has you father went?" Dan asks. "To find me a wife." I roll my eyes. "I don't understand why he needs to pick. Why can't I choose who I want to marry?" I complain, kicking a stone. "Why don't you just tell him that, and be with your girlfriend?" Dan asks. "Probably, because I don't have a girlfriend..." I laugh. "Boyfriend?" "No!" I say, louder than j should have. My face heats up and I quickly turn away. "And father would kill me if I ever was gay." I sigh. "Don't worry, you'll find someone." Dan says, and suddenly runs off.
