I wake up, confused, as usual. But this time was strange. I looked down and noticed that I was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday. That was unusual for me. I rarely just dozed off like that. Oh well, what was I going to do? I dressed into a fresh pair of clothes, and as I did so I took a glance at the piano. I popped my head out into the corridor to see if anyone was around. There was no one in sight, and so I quietly closed the door and sat in front of the door. I placed my hands on the keys, where Dan had showed me. I then mimicked the keys he had shown me, making a few mistakes here and there, but not bad. "Well, isn't that lovely." I hear a voice say from behind me. I jump, and turn around. "Miss. Allen, I didn't hear you come in." I flush. "Oh well, I was just dropping you off breakfast. And might I ask, who taught you how to play? I don't remember you ever having a teacher." She says, as she places a paper bag on top of the piano. "Dan taught me." I mumbled looking down at the floor. "That's adorable! I bet he's the best teacher, isn't he?" She cooes. "I am late to my sword fighting lessons." I say, trying to avoid anymore questions. I quickly run off.
It was a bit rude of me to do that, but I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable talking about Dan like that. I had only known him for a day. I don't even know if he thinks of me as a friend or not. As these thoughts went through my mind I come face-to-face with Dan. "You're late." He says, in a flat-tone. "Yeah, sorry. Miss. Allen and I had a small discussion." I explain. "About?" "The piano song you showed me..." Dan looks at me with surprise. "You actually decided to play it again?" "Yeah, but I did make a few mistakes." I shrug. "I didn't think you would actually play it again." He says, getting out his sword. "I told you, I wanted to learn." I chuckle. I see in the corner of my eye, Dan smiling. "Alright, we can continue that later. But right now we must fight." Dan says. I strike first, but Dan blocks it, our swords clashing.
After 10 rounds, I failed to beat him once, but I had gotten a little bit better. "That was a good match." Dan says, patting me on the back. He pushed his hair back, and drank a gulp of water. "Can we go play piano, now?" I ask. He nods, and we walk to my room. I sit down in front of the piano, and look up at Dan. "What's this?" Dan asks, holding up the paper bag. "Breakfast, you can have it if you want." I say. "Have you eaten yet?" He asks. "No," I admit. "But I'm fine." "We can just share." Dan says. He takes out a giant muffin and a fruit bowl. He split the muffin in half and handed me a piece. I thanked him, and ate it, exchanging small talk. "Ok, I'm going to say a note, and if you get it right. I'll feed you a fruit." Dan says. "I'm not a dog, Dan." "Just do it. It'll help." Dan laughs. And he kept try to his word. Anytime I got the note right, he fed me one, but when I got it wrong he just ate it himself. "So, I was thinking of teaching you another song." Dan says. "That would be great." I respond. Dan had taken his same position as last time. His chest against my back, his hands over mine, his head just above my shoulder. But this time I swear his heart was beating a bit fast. But it could've been my imagination. I concentrate and watch him guide my hands to each key. His hands were so gentle and graceful. I smiled at the thought of holding them, but quickly tossed the thought away. I shouldn't be thinking like that. After I had played the song by myself for the third time Dan got up and said he had to go help his mother back at the village. I offered to help, but he refused. When he left, I suddenly felt very lonely. I locked myself up in my room and didn't leave, until supper time. "Why didn't you come down for lunch? I started to worry about you." Miss. Allen says, handing me a plate. "Sorry, I just didn't really feel good." I mumble. "Well, I hope your not catching a cold. By the way that young boy, um, what was his name again?" "Dan?" I ask hopefully. "Oh yes! He left you a little note. Here you go." she said, handing me the piece of paper. "Thank you, Miss. Allen!" I say, hugging her. "Oh my, well, you're very welcome." she smiles. I take my food and the note up into my room.
"I can't meet you tomorrow morning, need to do some chores. But can meet up back at my house tomorrow at about noon to practice, instead. I'll be waiting.
-Dan"
I smiled at the note. I was upset that we weren't practicing, but at least we were going to be seeing each other later. I've had friends in the past, but I was never close to them, most of them were set up by Father. If only Mother was still here...I could talk to her about this. I shook my head, trying to get rid of the memories. I ate my dinner and placed Dan's letter in my trunk. I put anything of importance in it. I sat at the piano and took a deep breath. I placed my hands on the keys and started to play. I tried my best to play as gracefully as Dan had. It felt as if Dan was behind me, guiding me through the keys, but I knew I was alone in my room. Alone. It was a word that described me. I had always felt alone, since I was little. No one to depend on. No one to trust. No one to love. I loved Father, and Miss. Allen, and Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, but not in the way I want. Someone to wake up to. Someone to laugh with. Someone to live for. "I'll never find that person." I sigh. "Find who?" asks Miss. Allen. I jump in shock. "You have got to stop scaring me like that." I say, clutching my chest. "Sorry dear, I was just dropping by. But why don't you tell me? You look troubled." She said, sitting beside me. Miss. Allen reminded me of mother. She had the same kind eyes and motherly smile. "I'm just....scared. That I'll never find the one." I say. "Describe your definition of the one for you is." she said, gently. "Well...someone who I would love to wake up to in the morning. And could make me smile and laugh whenever I was sad. Someone who would care about me as much as I did them. Someone who makes me want to wake up, just so I can see their face." I say, looking down at the ground. "Well, I do have someone in mind." Miss. Allen says. "Please don't try to set me up with one of your nieces." I beg. "Of course not!" she giggles. "I was actually thinking of that, Dan fellow." I could feel my face redden, when she brought up his name. "When you two came into the kitchen, I hadn't seen you that happy for a very long time. You looked like you wanted to just freeze time then and there." she chuckled. "I-I-no Miss. Allen. I think you've got it wrong. I doubt he thinks of me like that, and father would never allow it. Also, don't forget father's picking me out a wife this very moment." I say, sighing again. "Phil, listen to me. I know it doesn't seem like it, but I do see a future with you two together. You probably think I'm crazy, but I see it. I really do. Just have that in mind." she says, and gets up. "Goodnight, Phil." she said, and closed the door. I sat there speechless. Me and Dan?
