I wake up with a yawn, and stretch my arms. After Miss. Allen had left last night, her words spun around my head. I did eventually get ready for bed, but had trouble sleeping. Images of Dan popped up in my mind. The same thoughts going around in my head. Was he thinking about me right now, like I was him? Was he also laying in bed, completely awake? Was I the only thing he could think of, like I was him?

I noticed a plate of pancakes on my desk. I got up and looked curiously at it, and noticed a note.

"Came over to give you breakfast, but you were fast asleep. I didn't want to wake you, so I decided to just put it down here.

Mrs. Carpenter"

I checked the time and noticed it was half past nine. I quickly ate my breakfast and went to go get washed up. By the time I was done, it was almost noon. I quickly headed off, avoiding questions from the guards, asking where I was going. I ran off into the woods, and later found the familiar cabin. I waited outside for Dan.

About half an hour had passed, and I was losing hope. I picked up my sword and got up ready to leave. Until I hear a yell from behind me. "Wait!" I turn around to see Dan, running at full speed. He slows down as he gets closer. He stops in front of me and pants. "Sorry *pant* I* pant* was late." he said. "Take a few breathes. It's ok." I said, relieved he hadn't forgot about me. He took one final breath and straightened up. "My chores took longer than I thought they would. I was afraid, you would have left earlier." Dan says. "Why would I have, it's only been about half an hour." I shrug. "It's been two hours, Phil!" Dan exclaims. "Oh, wow! I didn't know I was here for that long." I say, surprised. "I"m glad you're at least still here. Now we can-" Dan says, but suddenly looks around in panic. "What is it?" I ask. "I forgot my bloody sword!" he says, face palming. I let out a giggle at his frustration. "You know what, we can do something else. Maybe some wrestling?" Dan offers. "Okay, but go easy on me. I'm not really-" but before I can continue he pounces on me. "That's cheating!" I yelp. "Too bad." he laughs.

It's practically sundown and we were both rolling around in the grass, wrestling. Dan finally pins me to the ground. He was on his knees, leaning over me, my hands pinned to my sides. "Haha I win!" he says, triumphantly. My head was turned to the side, and I said, "Yeah, yeah. Congratulations. What do you want a prize?" I laugh. I then turn my face to meet his gaze. I froze. His face was just inches away, I could feel his breath on my face. "I want you." he breathes. "What?" I ask, not sure if I heard him clearly. "Oh, um nothing." Dan quickly says, his face red. He gets off me, and gives me room to get up. I sit up and brush myself off. Did he say he wanted me? Words from Miss. Allen, all of a sudden flood into my mind. "I do see a future with you two together." "Phil?" Dan says, waving a hand in front of me. "Oh, um, yeah?" I say, returning back to reality. "I asked if you wanted to come in to eat." Dan, says gesturing to the cabin. The castle normally closes off everyone at 8. I could probably be back, before it closes. "Yeah, sure." I say, following him inside the house. He quickly heads off into the kitchen. "Just hang out in the living room!" he hollers. I take a seat on his couch, and sit in silence.

I then got curious on what Dan was doing and got up. There was a delicious aroma coming from the kitchen. Dan was behind the stove, mixing something inside the pot. "You can cook?" I ask surprised. "Oh, um yeah...well we don't all have our own personal chefs." he jokes. I laugh nervously, not sure how to respond. I look over his shoulder to see what he was cooking. "Pasta! That's my favorite food in the whole wide world!(A/N btw I know that Phil's favorite food is actually popcorn, but lets just pretend its pasta) How did you know?" I ask, practically drooling over the food. "I asked Miss. Allen, while I gave her the note." he said. And I swore he had blushed. "Well, it smells amazing." I compliment. "Thanks." he smiles. He later finishes, and we sit down in the living room. "This is really good." I say, with a mouthful of pasta in my mouth. He laughs and takes a bite himself. We chat about random things as we eat. We were dieing of laughter by the time we finished. "I don't think I've laughed this hard in so long." I say, wiping tears away from my eyes. "It's not my fault I didn't see Mr. Reed." laughs Dan. We put away our plates, and I help him clean up. I look at the window and notice it's almost pitch black outside. "Hey, what time is it?" I ask, anxiously. "It's 9:34." Dan answers. "Crap! The castle closes off everyone at 8 o' clock." I groan. "It's ok, you can just stay the night here with me." Dan shrugs. "Thanks." I respond. I wander back into the living room and notice a note. I knew I should snoop, so instead I picked it up and asked him about it. "What's this?" I ask. "Oh, it's a letter from your dad. It's just him begging me to become a knight and stuff like that. You can read it if you want." He said, heading off to his room. I sit down on the couch and unfold the letter.

"Dear Mr. Howell,

As you know, I have offered you many times to become one of our fellow knights. Your fighting technique and skill is extraordinary. We would love for someone like you to, help other knights and to lead them into battle. You can join anytime you want, just inform me on the matter, and you'll be in. We need someone like you, Daniel.

Sincerely,

King Lester"

I take time to process it, and put the letter down. I get up and walk into Dan's bedroom. He was taking out a bunch of blankets and pillows from his closet. "What're you doing?" I ask, confused. "I'm going to sleep on the couch." he said, plainly. "No, I'm not letting you sleep on the couch. I already feel bad that I'm staying here with you and that you cooked me dinner." I say. "Well, I'm not letting you sleep on the couch." Dan fought back. There was silence between us, none of us said a word. I broke the silence and sighed, "Lets just share the bed, I'll be on the right side. And you'll be on the left. Ok?" Dan nods in agreement. I let out a yawn. "I'm going to go sleep, first if that's ok with you." I say, sleepily. "Ok, I'm going to stay awake for a little while longer." Dan says. I watch him walk out of the room. I take off my shirt and turn the light off. I snuggle into the covers, but I couldn't sleep. I lay awake, motionless, listening to the shuffling of Dan's feet. He later then walks back into his room. I couldn't see him clearly because of how dark it was. I hear some rustling, and I later feel his presence on the other side of the bed. Still, wide awake I stare into a pit of darkness. But was interrupted by a whisper from Dan, "Phil? Are you awake?" "Yeah." I answer. "Can't sleep, also?" Dan asks. "Yeah." I say turning over to face him. My eyes had adjusted to the darkness and could now make out his features. I noticed that he was shirtless as well, and I hoped he couldn't see me blush. "Do you ever wonder about things? Like why are we here? Is there a specific reason to why me, a person, is here in this place at this exact time?" He asks. "Not really. But now that I'm thinking about it. Yes." I answer. There's once again silence, but I didnt notice, because I was too busy questioning my existence because of Dan. These thoughts disappear as Dan scoots closer to me. "So, what was she like?" Dan asks. "Who?" "You're mother." He says. Those words felt like someone had just stabbed arrows into my chest. "But if it's too personal...you don't have too..." Dan adds. "No, its ok I'll tell you." I say. "Mum was one of the kindest people I ever knew. She loved to donate things and help others. I remember her giving me a talk about sharing after I refused to share my wooden toy dragon with another boy." I smile at the memory. "But when I was about 8, she got caught with a severe illness. The nurses did all that they could, but they couldn't fix her. At that time I had no idea what was going on. Turned out my mum only had a few more days to live." I stutter, on the verge of tears. "During those few days, the only people who could see her was father and the nurses. They didn't let me in, saying that I wouldn't understand. But I knew...I knew she was dieing." I say, and start to cry. The tears streaming down my face. I turn around, so I wouldn't be facing Dan. And I let the tears go flooding out. "I-I d-didnt even get t-to hear her s-say her l-last w-words." I sob. Dan then scoots closer to me and wraps his arms around my torso. "It's ok." He whispered. "She loves you very much. She's in heaven right now, probably smiling at you. Because shes so proud on the person you have become." Dan said, like I was some little kid. I didn't mind though, I actually liked it. He snuggled up a bit closer to me getting comfortable. I sniffed and tried to wipe away most of my tears. "It's ok to cry, you know." Dan whispers. "I know." I whisper back. I had never talked about this with anyone. It brought back many memories that I wish I could forget, but it felt...good to have told someone and let it all out. And with that I fell asleep in Dan's arms.

Literally if this isn't cute then I don't know what is. I felt so sad, writing the back story for his mom though. But I hope you liked the chapter, anyways!
