The look I gave my brother only confused him. For me, in the current state I was in, there was no other way for me to communicate to him.

'Careful,' he mind-linked me. 'That's the Alpha King.'

Every bone in my body felt broken, blood running cold, heart beating against my rib cage.

No . . . No! How could this be? How could . . . a thing such as this exist?

You knew all this time. Do not act surprised, a whisper came from the back of my mind, sounding gentle yet being stern.

And I knew then that the voice was telling the truth. I did know; I just didn't want to acknowledge the truth.

'Ellie, what's wrong?' Zach asked in a worried voice, glancing at me from the corner of his eye.

"He's my mate," I said aloud and through our mind-link.

Everyone froze and the air in the room dropped below zero as they processed this information. Hell, I was still trying to process this. The person that has destroyed so many packs for no reason and caused such grief is my mate. The person that threatened my family is my mate. The person that had kidnapped Ellie is my mate. The most dangerous and powerful being is my mate. Yup, that's going to take some time to sink in.

"What are you talking about?" rasped Zach in shock whilst staring at me.

But I wasn't looking at him or the Beta. I was looking straight at the shadowy figure standing in the darkest corner.

"Seems not likely, I know," I agree readily. "It's true though."

"You said your mate rejected you," he reminded me, frowning.

I nod once. "Yup, and he's standing right in front of you. I told you I was rejected, but not by who, remember? Hell, I didn't know who he was myself."

"You didn't know yourself," Zach repeated. "Well then, if you don't show yourself then I'll gladly rip you to pieces."

There goes the protective brother that I've always both loved and was scared of. Well, scared for the person who was on the other side of his anger. But at the back of my mind, despite all the threats and harm the Alpha King has inflicted on my family, there was this side of me that couldn't help feeling protective of my ex-mate. Ignoring my protective instincts, I said nothing, deciding to agree with my brother.

"Thank you, Zach," I said fondly, turning my smile to the Beta and the hidden Alpha King. "And thank you for not harming my brother."

They didn't bother covering their surprise as I turned to Zach, smiling at his frowning face.

"We'll be going now," Zach said sternly as he grabbed my hand and started to walk forward but stopped when I didn't follow. "Ellie . . . ?"

Whatever he was going to say died on his lips, eyes narrowing on me, jaw clenched. Zach knew what I was going to do.

The coldest laugh I've ever heard made me shiver in pleasure. I push the feeling away and stay calm, taunting him.

"Look, we have a family to get back to, and I have someone special I need to see."

"And who would be this special someone?"

"Why would you care? You rejected me. I found someone else," I said simply. "Bye."

All around us the shadows quivered with darkness, coming to life and threatening. From the darkness fingers brush against my arm, and I pull back in shock as electrical currents shot through my entire body. It was like nothing I've ever experienced before except in my dreams.
