Gemma told me that as she was growing up, and you know, getting crushes and all that, she'd always take a step back and then check against a list (not necessarily her list) and then reprogram her attraction.
She's Catholic and Filipino and she knows that us Protestants and us Chinese, our list might not coincide with hers. So she'd just avoid us.
It's better to just avoid all that drama altogether. Well, lucky for her, her boyfriend also happens to be Catholic and Filipino.
As if attractions can be flipped off like a switch. And not all of us are as lucky as she.
The Chinese have a saying which says something like doors must match, since the stone decorations located in old Chinese houses also indicates the status of the occupants. What that means is that families that are well-matched in terms of social status makes an appropriate match.
And I suppose that does make a lot of sense. Because we are shaped by nature and nurture and it's easier to relate to someone who is coming from the same place.
After all, why should we insist on trying to fit a square peg in a round hole?
