I woke up to my phone alarm going off. It was 9:00. In a hour I would see my best friend. I rolled over to see that I was laying in Chad's bed alone. He must be in the shower or something. I got up and walked to his closet, I had some clothes in there for when I stayed over. I yanked the door open and grabbed a normal tee and a pair of jean shorts. I would wear the flip flops that I wore over. I heard the shower door slam. I walked to the bathroom a few doors down from his room to change. When I got to the door I knocked first to make sure no one was in there. No one said they were in there so I walked in. I shut the door and reopened it when I was done changing. Chad was in the kitchen pouring a bowl of cereal.
I drove back to Bodi's. We got stuck in a traffic jam. It was because there was a car accident and they were cleaning it up.
"It's 9:30 so we got time."
"Yeah. I know. I wanted to be back before everyone else would be there."
"Isn't there another way back there? Like the back roads?"
"Yeah."
I shifted into reverse and turned. I switched lanes. I turned onto a road that was gravel. I speed up to make up for lost time and because it's just what we always did. Rocks and sand spit up at my car. I really didn't care. Chad's hand reached to turn the music up. He started to mumble the words. When we got back onto the main road I slowed down. I slowed even more when I turned into the neighborhood where Bodi and Serina live.
I turn into the drive way and park. Everyone one else's cars are already here. I look at the clock. It's 10:20. Bodi is going to be so pissed. We walk in and go into the living room. Everyone turns to look at us. From there faces I could tell that saying Bodi was okay about us being late was not even close to the truth.
"I wanted you hear twenty minutes ago."
"Calm down. There was a accident so we had to take the back roads."
"Oh. Well I'm going to go get her. She might not be in the best mood."
Bodi walked out of the room and left. We finished putting up the rest of the decorations. I started to think about the beach house. How was she going to come with us?
Bodi came back ten minutes later. The door opened and I could hear him pushing her wheelchair. He turned the chair slowly and into the room. Serina wore running shorts and a shirt from last year's track.
We all said different versions of a hello and waited quietly for her to respond."Hi."
"Hows your knee," Abbie said from behind me.
"The doctor said that I just fractured it. It might need surgrey. I have to go back in a few days." She looked up at Bodi and said,"I have a headache. Take me to our room, please."
He looked at all of us and shrugged. There was nothing he could do to make her feel better. I sat down in a chair nearby. I felt like I couldn't do anything to make her feel better about it. Bodi walked back into the room.
"Sorry guys, I think you all should leave. I don't think she wants anyone here right now."
We all looked at each other. I got up and headed through the doorway. I walked out of the house and to my car. I opened the door and just sat there. I didn't want to do anything or go anywhere. I remember how I had felt when I broke my ankle. I just wanted to be left alone. Of course my parents were away and my friends helped me the whole time.
The passenger side door shut. I jumped and looked over. It was Tamryn.
"I feel so bad for her. I can't even imagine how she must feel."
"Me too. I understand. I was the same way when I broke my ankle."
"Oh yeah. I forgot about that. Weren't your parents out of town?"
"Yeah." We both noticed Lonnie walking up the drive way.
She shifted uncomfortably. "Well I better go talk to him."
"What happened between you two anyway?"
"It's a long story..."
She filled me in on what happened. Then she got out and went over to him. I put the key in the ignition and started my car. I was about to leave when Chad opened the door and got in.
"Were you going to leave without me?"
"I guess so. I forgot you were in there. I just can't be here while shes like that."
He grabbed my hand. It made me feel a little better. I told him I was going to take him home then go to my house to pack more clothes.
