Chapter Five
Earth
I'd never seen the sky before. I'd overhear the guards each night talking about the science of stars and clouds. But I'd never seen one before. The way the dark shades of blue mixed in with the grey of the disappearing clouds made my eyes fixate. The stars seemed to stare back at me, they made my heart jump. I felt excitement rise up in my body. But then I looked down at him.
The seconds passed by like years. He wouldn't get up. I found myself screaming at the blank face that was staring back at me. He was just lying there motionless. My hands felt like a tonne of bricks from carrying him from the burning building. His leg was seeping out with deep red blood, it wouldn't stop. His forehead was decorated with an increasingly large dark purple bruise, from colliding with the chair in the corridor. I tried to remind myself that he'd be okay, he'd start to heal herself soon. But no matter how often I reminded myself, I still found myself screaming for him to wake up.
I convinced myself that I'd ran far enough from the isolation building that they wouldn't find us for awhile, and that I could get some sleep. Some was better than none.
