The ride seemed never-ending. They rode across fields and it didn't feel like a couple of hours had passed. It felt like days had gone by. They were getting hungry and tired, so they decided to stop at a reasonable spot. They made camp by a river, which had protection from the trees. They tied their horses to some low branches of the trees. Edmund started a fire, while Caspian and Peter went to get some extra firewood. Susan took Lucy to find something to eat. They eventually came back with a pheasant. They ate their meal and then retired for the night.
They were all laying around the fire. Peter was fast asleep with Edmund to his right and Lucy to his left. Caspian and Susan were on the other side of the fire from Peter. Susan was so tired that she was the first to fall asleep. However, Caspian was having a hard time falling asleep. He was tossing and turning, but he couldn't fall asleep. He woke up Susan from all his tossing and turning.
Susan turned to face Caspian, who was getting irritated.
"Why aren't you asleep?" Susan asked tiredly.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you," Caspian apologized. "I'm having a hard time falling asleep."
"I guess the life of a king has rubbed off on you," Susan chuckled.
"Guess so." Caspian agreed.
There was a pause between them, causing an awkward silence. They looked at each other, hoping that one of them would continue the conversation.
"What is it like being a king?" Susan continued to ask.
"You of all people should know what it is like," added Caspian.
"To be honest, I don't remember what it is like," Susan sighed. "It's been so long, that I don't feel like I know Narnia anymore."
Caspian was shocked by what Susan had just told him. Susan was a queen, and he thought that she of all people would know what the responsibilities and things that a king had to do, but since they have been away for a while, he realized that wasn't it anymore. Susan told Caspian to get some sleep and turned to her other side, falling asleep. Caspian stayed up for a little while longer. He thought about how she had left him. How she walked through the tree and was gone. Now that she is back, she isn't the same. He looked at her and then fell asleep, hoping that tomorrow would be a better day.
