It was a Frigid November day, and Liz ( short for Elizabeth and my best friend since age 14) and we're walking, scanning the campus scouting for possible dates, even though we look like deformed weirdos since we were crouching in the wind. I had just turned 24 a month ago, I was a normal college kid doing my graduate's in American History,( well not exactly "normal" I mean I'm your common average every day orphan whose parents died in a car accident when she was 10 and luckily got a good family that let her keep my last name). Right when Liz caught her eye on an attractive victim, while I was thinking about my paper on England's reaction to our victory when I saw it. A small, thin, tiny tree, that you wouldn't look twice at if it weren't for its golden leaves, with a glistening silver trunk that shined like the moon.
I nudged Liz, " what's the deal with giving tree over there?"
Liz raises a confused eyebrow, "Are you hallucinating, because I told you not to eat the brownies at the party last night, and I don't thi-"
I jerk her head toward the tree " That tree dimwit, check-in that big book of university landmarks maybe its some student dedication statue or something."
Liz continued giving me the loony stare, until i hit the back of her head with a stick( in my defense she knows i hate that look),
" ow what the hell claire?!" Liz yelped,
I use the stick to point viciously at the tree. Liz looks through her bag in a panicked manner knowing that that hadn't been there a second ago,
" Um that tree was not there before"she then searches the book,
"Yeah okay just look" I sarcastically tease.
She shakes her head, "Yeah according to this book that doesn't exist"
Liz lays the book down on the grass near the tree gently almost as if she thought she was gonna to anger it if she made any sudden movements . I approach it, Liz mouths no, frightened that the tree will hear her. A dingy gray stone, about the size of a small throw pillow, with silver engraving on it lay beside the tree, something pulls me to it. On the stone it stated, " Pour la Bellfleur famile, seulment Pour le Bellefleur famile pour lire et trouver" Liz smirks like she knows exactly what was happening when the opposite was occurring,
" Ha! Its in French that's what you get for taking American Sign Language!"
I focus on the writing which seemed familiar, but i still taunt Liz," You took Spanish like every other lazy high school student- I sign " take that blondie" a term that liz knows what it is since I often tease her with it - so I'm special, hmph" I study the engraved markings, read them over and over again,
" HAHA I'M LAUGHING SO HARD!! NOT what do you care about that stone so much anyway it's probably just a prank made by some frat guys or something. You can't even read it why are you still staring at it?"
To liz's surprise I respond," It says: For the Bellfleur family, only for the Bellfleur family to read, and to find."
A priceless look on Liz's shocked face appears,"Since when do you speak French?"
Her reply shakes me to attention as if being woken from a trance,"I don't know it just kinda came to me I saw my last name and it just worked."
I shrug Liz begins laughing, " Is this a prank? Are you joking right now, trying to scare me, well its not gonna work."
A question echoed in my head: Why could I read that? and it kept me from sleep I had to investigate more, But before the answer came the trance returned, and made me go (but not alone because of course i had to bring my reluctant friend out of bed and into the muddy field where the tree was at about 1:30am) to pick up the stone. After searching in the dark around the tree for 3 hours I then found the object that would change my life
