Pete's POV
I knocked on the door to Alpha's office. "You needed me, sir?" I asked him through the door.
"Ah, Pete. Come on in," was the reply. I turned the handle and walked in, making sure to close the door.
"I'm sorry it took me longer to get here. I had to clean up a mess," I said sheepishly, rubbing the back of my neck. "What can I do for you, Alpha Mejia?"
He looked up at me and smiled, "I understand. When I told your mother that I needed to see you I understand completely. I used to do the same thing when my son and daughter were younger," his eyes got a glazed look as he remembered. Then he shook his head and looked back at me, becoming serious. "Well to get back to business. I was wanting to send you to Alpha Moore's pack to train, to become a better warrior. We could use the extra skills. When your training is done you can come back and train everyone else."
I looked at him completely dumbfounded. My mouth opened and closed like a fish. After a few minutes I found my voice. "You want me to become a better warrior, sir?"
"Yes, I do." He looked at me, barely moving his eyes away from my face. "You are an excellent warrior, but sadly I only have one of you. I want this pack to be better, better fighters. Alpha Moore is the best fighter. Are you willing to learn?"
I nodded my head vigorously, "Yes, sir! I want to become the best for my pack. I want to protect my pack and my family. I know my father would be proud of me," I pause wrapped in sadness at the thought of my father.
Alpha Mejia looks at me kindly, "Your father was a great Beta. I miss him, he was a dear friend of mine. I hope you can take his place when my son becomes Alpha." He smiled up at me, sadly. "Well, I'm going to call Alpha Moore and get the arrangements underway. Go home and pack. You will be leaving soon. Your mother already knows. You are dismissed. Oh, wait. Almost forgot, you can always come back and visit your mother and sister. I seen the look on your face," he added smiling.
I smiled relieved, "Thank you, sir! I won't let you down," I said as I walked out the door making sure to close it. As I walked through the pack house, I thought of all the training I'll be doing and getting to know his pack as I had a feeling I'll end up doing. Then I thought of my mom and sister and sighed. I got to find someone to look out for them that I trust.
As I reached the door I heard someone holler out, "Hey, Pete!" So I stopped and turned around to see Zack running down the store for me. "Thank the goddess you stopped I have been trying to get your attention ever since you left Dad's office. So what's got you so deep in thought? Oh, Dad already told me about what he wanted I just didn't want to spoil it before the meeting. So what's wrong?"
I looked at him and sighed, "Should have figured what you were so excited about before I walked into the office. Since I'm gonna be gone, I need someone to watch over my sister and mom. Someone I trust and then you started to call for me and I knew the moon goddess must me trying to help me out," I paused and looked at him hopefully, "Would you do me the honor of watching out for them while I'm gone? I know I have no right to ask this of you when you are training to be Alpha, but it would help me out so much if you would." I bowed my head as I finished.
I heard him sigh and felt him out his hand on my shoulder, "I will watch over them as if they were my own family," he pushed my shoulder to get my to stand up. As I met his eyes he smiled at me, "Besides it's the least I can do for my future Beta. Father said I should pick one but I already have picked you, the pack could use a beta like you. You will be great just like your father if not greater, if I may say so. I know he would be proud of you."
I couldn't help but stare at him with my mouth slightly open. I tried talking but I could find my voice. Then Victor nudged me, 'This is a great honor. Father would be proud of us. Besides we are wolves not fish,' he finished laughing.
I smiled at Zach, then answered him. "I would be honored to be your Beta. My dad would be proud of me. Well I got to go home to start packing. Later, Zach and thank you again." I waved as I walked out the door and ran home to let my mom know what was going on.
...
1 hour later
"I'm gonna miss you bubby! I'll make sure I keep Zack on his toes with me," Jessie looked up at me grinning, her little devil grin.
I laughed, "How about you behave and don't cause a lot of trouble for him? Promise me?" I asked her, she nodded and started to skip away. I then look at Mom and walked over to her, hugging her.
"My son, future Beta. Only if your father could be here to see this," she said with tears in her eyes and voice. "Carter would be so proud," she pulled say to look at me then turned around and grabbed a bag off the counter and grabbed my hand. "Let's get you on the road, young man."
I smiled at her and started walking toward my truck. Knowing that no matter what, I had to make my family proud.
