"And Steve from the diner said he would give you your job back. I guess they're really short handed since you left!" Mom said with a smile.

"Oh great," I said sarcastically.

"Well it's better than no job at all. And you should be thankful that he would even take you back after," she stopped herself.

"I'll call him in the morning, I'm sure he would let me start tomorrow." I said dragging my fork through the mashed potatoes on my plate. Though I had missed Mom's cooking, I just didn't have an appetite.

"Yeah, I'm sure he would like that."

"Eat up, it'll get cold," Dad said pointing toward my plate. I glanced toward theirs, both clear.

"Sorry, just not that hungry."

"Did you eat on the plane?" Mom asked.

"Yeah," I lied.

"Why didn't ya say so?" Mom said rising from the table, taking all three plates with her.

"Ella?" Dad said before standing. "It's good to have you back."

"Thanks," I smiled, though I couldn't help but feel a bit guilty for wishing that I wasn't back.

Dad smiled before heading toward the living room to watch TV. Mom headed back toward the dining table, placing her hand on mine as she sat down beside me.

"So?" she said.

"So what?"

"So spill the beans," she said looking at me with knowing eyes.

"What are you talking about?"

"Your eyes are puffy and sad. I know you didn't cry that much from leaving a city. Spill the beans?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You forget that I've known you since before you were born. I know everything about you."

"Sure," I laughed.

"If you don't want to tell me that's fine."

"Alright," I said standing and entering to kitchen to grab a bottle of water.

"But just know that I love you, I'm glad you're back. And whenever you're ready I'll be here. I'll always be here. No matter where you are."

She headed toward the living room and I stood in awe in the middle of the kitchen. How did she always know what to say? I swear that's something that comes with being a mom. You just automatically get a gene or something that gives you the power to always know.
