"So, charlene is neither my daughter nor my sister. She's sharon's daughter. My niece." Luke started.
"What? Didn't she... commit suicide?"
Luke sighed. "Yeah, my sister gave birth to charlene when she was 17, I was 13 at that time."
"I don't know what she was thinking, but maybe it was because she didn't have a mom to teach her about those things. Wait no I mean, everyone has a mom, but ours died when I was 7. Maybe my sister thought her boyfriend would never leave her and maybe she trusted her boyfriend so much, that she had sex with him. When she figured out that she was pregnant, she insisted on keeping her baby. She said she would be guilty for the rest of her life if she aborted the baby.
"After our mom died and before sharon got pregnant, she was always the one to protect me from my dad, and-"
"Why would she protect you from your own dad?" Gabriella arched her brow.
"Right, so my dad was and is.. Abusive. He wasn't that bad when mom was still here, but when she died, he got worse. He was drunk most of the time, he screamed at us, and sometimes literally hurt us. Me and sharon were lucky that our uncle's family was willing to pay for our school and such because they felt bad about our mom and us.
"So back to the point, after sharon gave birth to charlene, I don't know how but the information spread so quickly that almost the whole school knew about it. She started to get bullied, and then she was dropped out of school.
"That's what I don't understand about people's brains sometimes, hun bun. My sister was already in a very bad position, yet people still had the freaking guts to call her a bitch, bully her. Sharon always said that she was okay, and I shouldn't worry about her. She said she never let her bullies's words get into her skin. And I stupidly believed her, for god's sake. If I did something to help her, I could've saved her."
Whilst saying that, tears were forming in luke's eyes. She could hear the regret in his voice and Gabriella's heart broke for him. She moved to beside him and held his hand, which was quite shaking.
"But my sister was lying, abby. She DID try not to let their words get into her skin, but truth was, their words stabbed their ways into her bones and stayed in her brain, in her heart, and they became a part of her, telling and convincing her that she was a bitch, a slut. They made her believe that she didn't have a future anymore, that she wasn't worth it."
Gabriella felt a lump forming in her throat. She didn't know luke was going to tell her these. She suddenly felt bad for sulking at him earlier and basically forcing him to open up to her. She honestly wasn't expecting this kind of information out of him.
"Um.. And, what about charlene's dad, Luke?"
He swallowed. "Oh, he moved out of town as soon as she told him she didn't want to abort the baby and never showed his nose ever again."
Luke looked up to stare into her eyes, and a tear slipped out of his eye. "Since then, my sister had the responsibility to protect me and charlene, to endure her bullies and to endure our abusive father. All at once. Alone."
