"Hey, girls, I was wondering," said Sarah, "since we didn't get to have small group last night, do you want to have it now?"
Jordyn, Cami, Emily, and I were gathered around. "I can't, 'cause my team is about to play," replied Emily, who was on blue.
"Our teams have already gone, so sure," Jordyn said. Cami was on pink; Jordyn was on orange; and I was on green, which meant we had all already played soccer for the day.
"Okay. Join us later if you can, Em," Sarah said, smiling. Then she led the rest of us to a quiet spot away from where everyone else was playing soccer.
"I guess none of you have your Bibles with you?" Sarah asked.
"No," we all said, shaking our heads.
"Okay, that's fine. Let's just talk about what's been going on at camp. Jordyn, why don't you start?"
"Well, I think this has been my favorite year of camp so far. My team's been doing really well in the games, and I think we might have a shot at winning," Jordyn said. "Oh, and the sessions have been great. I know the creation story is pretty basic, but it's cool to be doing an in-depth study of it."
"Yeah. Anyone else?" Sarah said, looking around the circle we'd formed.
"Um. I became a Christian yesterday," I told them.
"Yay! Welcome to the fam!" Jordyn exclaimed.
"Aw, I'm so proud of you, Rainy!" Cami squealed, hugging me.
"That's great, Rain," finished Sarah.
"Thanks, guys. I'm really glad I made this decision."
"How has your life changed since getting saved?" Sarah questioned.
"You mean in the past 24 hours? Um, I'm a lot less judgmental, I think. And I definitely have a more open mind during Pastor Brett's sermons. I used to dread going to sessions, but now I look forward to it," I explained.
"Awesome. Cami, anything you want to add?" Sarah asked.
"Uh...not really. Nothing's changed so far. But I've definitely had a lot of fun. And there's so many cute guys this year!" She blushed.
I rolled my eyes at that. Guys were a distraction...mostly. Which of course made me think of Lincoln. I couldn't seem to get him out of my head!
"Hmm, and who would those guys be? Anyone in particular?" Sarah said in a sing-song voice, raising her eyebrows.
"I like this guy on my team, Josh," Cami confessed. "He's sooo cute—and he has good style!"
Perfect for you, I thought.
"Jordyn, how 'bout you? Got your eyes on any boys?" Sarah asked.
Her face paled and she looked away nervously. "Uh...no, not really."
"Aha! She hesitated! There's gotta be someone!" Cami jeered.
Jordyn let out a big breath. "Okay, fine! I like Adam!" She covered her face with her hands, embarrassed.
"Aww, he's cute, Jo," Cami assured her. "You guys would be perfect together."
"I don't know. We're just friends."
"That's what they all say," Cami insisted, winking at Sarah and I.
Please don't ask who I like, please don't ask who I like, I chanted in my head.
"And you?"
Crap.
"Um. No one. I'm not here for the guys," I said, which was half true. I hadn't come to meet guys. I'd come because Emily invited me and I didn't want to let her down.
"Come on, you can tell us! We won't tell anyone," Cami pleaded.
I could feel my face turning red. "Uh..." I didn't want to tell them I liked Lincoln. Even if they were trustworthy, I didn't want everyone to know. Besides, I wasn't so sure I even liked him that much. He'd helped me become a Christian. That was all.
But they kept pressuring me, so I finally just made something up. "Okay, fine, I like Blake."
That shut them up.
