The next morning after breakfast, we headed out to the field for some games of soccer.
As soon as I joined my team and saw Amber, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how rude I was to her, how stupid I thought she was for telling me all those Bible verses. She deserved an apology. Even if most of my rudeness had been internal.
When we separated into teams, I pulled her aside. "Hey, I just wanted to apologize for how rude I was to you yesterday. I should've been more patient."
"Oh, that's okay. I forgive you," she said with a smile.
"Thanks. But I really wish I hadn't been so mean. Actually, I got saved a few hours later."
"Really? That's awesome, Rain!"
"Yeah! So I'm sorry for being rude. It won't happen again."
Since we were playing with the orange team today, Jordyn joined us, sporting an orange T-shirt and athletic shorts. She was tying her hair up in a ponytail. "Ready to kick some butt, ladies?!" she cried.
"Uh...I guess. I'm not very good at soccer. Or sports in general," I admitted.
Amber nodded in agreement, reminding me of how shy she'd been on the first day.
I was glad to have Jordyn on my team, though. With her, we could do exceptionally well. Maybe even win the game!
"Coach, can I be on offense?" Jordyn called to our team leader, James.
"Sure thing, Jo!" he replied.
Blake was on defense, along with Peter and a girl from the orange team. Daniel and Kelsey joined Jordyn on offense. That left me, Amber, and a few guys from the orange team to be goalie or sit on the sidelines until halftime, when we would switch out with some of the other players. A guy from orange who introduced himself as Kirby offered to play goalie.
"Fine with me," I mumbled, and I could see the look of relief on Amber's face.
We went to sit on the sidelines with the three leftover guys from the orange team. "What's your guys' names?" I asked, wanting to make conversation so we wouldn't be bored.
"I'm Adam," said a tall, dark-haired boy. He was kinda cute, but not as cute as Lincoln.
"I'm Ryker," said a boy with shaggy blonde hair. It had bright red highlights on the ends.
"Wow, cool name," I said. "And you are?"
The last guy said his name was Samuel. "Sam for short," he added. He had light brown hair and freckles. Yup, definitely a Sam.
"Are you guys any good at soccer?" I asked.
"Nah," said Ryker. "I'm more of a music guy."
"I love sports," said Adam. "Soccer, baseball, football. I play a lot at my school."
"I like soccer, but I'm not that good," Sam replied. "How 'bout you?"
"Eh, I'm not really into sports. Probably because I suck." All the guys laughed, and even Amber giggled a bit. "By the way, my name's Rain."
"Wow, cool name!" Adam exclaimed. Of course. The compliment I knew like the back of my hand.
Blushing, I said, "Thanks."
After that we talked about school and the different churches they went to. Turns out none of them knew each other outside of camp. I found that kind of interesting.
Soon enough, the coach from the orange team blew his whistle, signaling halftime. "Ugh," I groaned. "Time to get out there and play." I switched with Kelsey, who had been on offense.
As soon as the game started back up, I wished I'd picked a different position. Offense required all the running!
I huffed and puffed around the field, not really knowing what I was doing. I even fumbled with the ball a couple times, but people from the opposite team always stole it from me.
One time, when I had it under my feet, I realized who I was up against; Lincoln. He was on the black team, one of the teams we were facing, along with pink.
"Um," I said, looking up at him. I knew it wasn't a good strategy. It would give him the chance to steal the ball! But I didn't know what to do, so I just kind of stood there awkwardly.
"Rain, pass!" called Ryker, who was also on offense.
"Huh?" I whipped around to face him. "Oh." Then I kicked the ball in his direction, and he started dribbling down the field. But he didn't get very far before a girl from the pink team stole it away.
We ended up winning the game, but not by much. The final score was 4-3. Jordyn had scored three of those four goals. "Dude, you're so good!" I told her.
"Thanks!" she replied, hugging me.
Adam came over to join us and as soon as he did, Jordyn started blushing. I thought it was because she'd just played a grueling game of soccer, but then I saw her twirling her long brown hair and when I glanced at Adam, I knew exactly why she was so red all of a sudden. Jordyn had a crush on Adam.
