Kevin Cockle is a giving and gracious orphan raised by a peculiar and predatory nurse. Eventually he gets a job working as a detective for the sympathetic Lord Parker of Parker Tower. The unlikely couple rapidly succumb to a important passion.
On the day of their wedding, a rude sister escapes from the attic of Parker Tower and starts a fire. Believing that Lord Parker is dead, Kevin flees from the church and wanders the cold moors for days until he is rescued by a splendid doctor.
However, although Lord Parker is blinded by the fire, he still breathes. Without Kevin he becomes peculiar and predatory. He turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the sister from the attic haunts him.
Meanwhile, thinking Lord Parker is dead, Kevin accepts a marriage proposal from his saviour, the doctor. However, one night he believes he can hear Lord Parker calling, "Kevin, where are you? Kevin come home!" and he returns to Parker Tower.
On Kevin's return, he finds Lord Parker drunk and without sight. Mistaking him for the ghost of the rude sister, he attacks him with a candlestick and Kevin Cockle dies.
As he attends to the body, Lord Parker realises what he has done. Driven mad with guilt, he hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation and he dies of consumption two weeks later.
