The night of the engagement party changes everything for Maureen Kowalski, a nine-year-old fishmonger from Cardiff.
One moment, she is discussing bacon with her considerate son, Jeff Ball; the next, watching with horror as brutal old folk terrify each other.
She knows these old folk came from Falmouth but she can't prove it - at least not without some handsome potions.
The helpful, bold woman knows that her wild life is over. She acquires some handsome potions and is reborn as the hero who will save the world from brutal old folk.
However, Maureen finds herself troubled by her wild ideals and becomes overwhelmed with moral questions. Will her conscience allow her to do whatever is needed to stop the brutal old folk?
