I broke a nail when I opened the door to the science lab. Damn it hurt. I had promised myself I'd stop using the long glued on fake nails even though they made my hands look good. I had a very important meeting with the dean of the college this morning to determine if our research project would be funded for another year. They all were waiting on me even though I was early. The looks on the faces of the other research teams seemed grim. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach that all my research in techeon particles was going to be thrown out the window.
I was so close to have a working model of the techeon funnel it was just ironic that they were going to close us down. Or maybe that was it, they knew about all my research and was selling me out. I was pissed. I had spent the last two year of my life working on all the equations, if you could call it a life. I had no social life and evening meals were microwave noodles every night.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news but because of the worsting economy we are going to have to shut down all of our research divisions," Dean Johnson said with a sad look on his face.
"Will we have the customary two weeks to find other work?" I asked.
"No everything has to be cleared out this afternoon," he said.
"What," I said.
"Yes the construction worker will start demolition tomorrow morning changing the labs into classrooms," Dean Johnson sadly said, "I am sorry but I found out all the details this morning myself," he added.
The other seven lab technicians started packing their thing. I went to the bathroom and felt sick enough to throw up but didn't. I pulled out a brush and combed my hair then searched my purse for an elastic band to put up my hair. I felt like punching something but I could hear my mom saying ladies don't do things like that. So I waded up the paper towel real tight then missed the trash can on purpose.
I calmed myself down before I opened the bathroom door. I only had a few hours to rescue all my work from demolition. Professor Leland came over to say good bye. He was an inspiration to me and many other.
"I'm sorry Jamie that they don't realize how important your work is to the future," Professor Leland said.
"Well it's going to take more than them closing my lab down to stop my poject," Jamie said with an air of determination in her voice.
"Is there any way I can help you?" he asked.
"No I have all of my research on my laptop and a few boxes," Jamie answered.
"I've read that they needing a teachers aide on the bulletin board in the lobby," Professor Leland said.
"Thanks professor but I'll be busy for a little while," Jamie said.
"That's the spirit. Let me know if you have any breakthroughs and I'll talk to the dean for you," Professor Leland said as he walked out the door.
Jamie packed up all her stuff in four boxes. She said good bye to everyone and promised to stay in touch. After she loaded her car she took off her lab coat and then sat behind the steering wheel. Jamie hurried home because she still had work to do on the techeon funnel.
Chester, her orange colored tabby cat rubbed up against her leg as she unlocked the apartments front door. He meowed to her.
"I know I'm home early but I was let go today," Jamie said to Chester.
He instinctively knew that she was upset and hopped up in her lap and purred away. He knew it would cheer her up. Jamie rubbed Chester until he almost fell asleep. She sat him in the chair and then brought her boxes and laptop in and placed them on the kitchen table. She opened her laptop and continued to work.
