Chester was still asleep on the couch when Jamie unlocked the front door. She hurried inside and put the bags on the kitchen table. She searched her bedroom dresser drawer for an old digital wrist watch and smiled when she found it. In about an hour she had made a time traveling wrist watch using a few chips and the techeon funnel. This time she flattened the funnel so that it wouldn't snag any of her long sleeved blouses. The larger battery bank would allow her many time jumps before recharging. It was getting late so she picked up Chester and went to bed.
The next morning she made coffee and sipped on it as she thought about what happened the previous morning. Jamie opened a can of cat food for Chester and plopped on to a plate. She thought about her lab and how it would look this morning with big construction men walking around with hard hats, tee shirts, jeans and boots on. She pictured one of the construction workers taking a sledgehammer to that leaky faucet that dripped all the time.
She wondered why hadn't they given her more of a notice about the layoff. Something didn't seem right. There were no construction worker any where looking the site over like there had been on several occasions when the university had work done on the buildings.
Jamie thought that she needed to find out the truth so she dressed for work and went in to apply for the teachers aide job, She walked up to the bulletin board and called the number for an appointment. Professor Leland saw her and walked up to her.
"How are you holding up?" he asked.
"Okay. I realized that I still have to pay the bills so here I am looking for work," Jamie said.
"What about your work. How are you coming along with that?" Professor Leland asked.
"I've been having problems balancing out some of the equations so I put my work on the back burner," Jamie answered.
"If you need a reference I'd be glad to provide one for you," he said as the class bell rang.
"Thanks Professor Leland," Jamie said as she walked around the corner.
Jamie listened for the construction that was suppose to be in full swing this morning. Her lab quiet and all locked up. What if she was right? Her heart beat wildly in her chest as she cautiously walked to the deans office. No one was there not even his sectary. She heard voices coming her way so she hid in his bathroom. No sooner than she had closed the door, Dean Johnson and Professor Leland walked in to the office. Dean Johnson closed the office door and Jamie listened through the bathroom door.
"Miss Jamie Granger was here earlier," Professor Leland said.
"What was she doing her?" Dean Johnson asked.
"She was getting a phone number off of the bulletin board for work," the Professor answered.
The Dean reached for the phone and called the teacher who put up the ad on the bulletin board. The phone rang on the other side.
"Hello this is Dean Johnson. When a Miss Jamie Granger calls I want you to tell her that the job has already been taken. I know you haven't filled the position yet. Just tell her that. I'll talk to you later. Okay," he said as he hung up the phone.
Jamie put her hand over her mouth to keep from screaming. She was super pissed, but continued to listen.
"Two days ago I received a visit from a man in a black business suit. He showed me his credentials to prove who he said he was. He explained to me that if we didn't immediately close down the research department that he would stop all of our funding, take away our accreditation and fire everyone. I made a few calls and found out what he was saying was true and that he could do that. What was I to do?" Dean Johnson asked.
"Did he say why?" the Professor asked.
"He said we were to stop our techeon research and delete all of our records of it. When the desk phone rang I looked down at the blinking red light and when I looked back up he was gone," Dean Johnson said.
"Wow. Imagine that," Professor Leland said.
"Yes but you didn't hear it from me. I got my pension to worry about," Dean Johnson answered.
Jamie had heard enough she set her watch to send herself back in time, before the bell rang. It did. She slowly opened the bathroom door and walked out. No one had seen her as she left the building and drove home. She thought to herself what am I gonna do? I still have to make a living even though I'm not allowed to work at the university anymore.
