..."...How could this happen?...Am I dreaming again?...Her body's not moving, I'm assuming she's dead..."...

"Come in." I call and a moment later my dad walks in and sets on the end of my bed.

"Your mom went to grams for the night; she said she will see you in the morning."

"Let's hear it then dad." I blow out a puff of air as I wait for the lecture to begin.

"I'm sorry your mother upset you today bud." His tone is soft.

"What? Aren't you going to yell at me for disrespecting my mother?" I can't keep the shock out of my voice.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I know what kind of son I raised Landon. I know that she must have really said something that hurt you if you spoke to her the way she said you did."

"It wasn't just one thing dad. I guess I'm just tired of her swooping in here and acting like she's this perfect parent when she never was. You were the one who really raised me, not her, but I did have a nice talk with her today and she made me understand that maybe she just wasn't ready to be a mother to me. She even apologized to me."

"She really did try, you know. Maybe I should have let her go a long time ago, then maybe you wouldn't feel so hateful towards her."

"What do you mean, let her go a long time ago?"

"I think you are old enough to hear the truth. You weren't exactly planned Landon. Your mom was only seventeen when she got pregnant with you and she was scared; she wanted to get an abortion. I begged her not to. I promised her that if she just stayed with me, then everything was going to be okay. We went to the JP and got married and the next seven and a half months was hard; your mother fought with me every day because she was miserable. By the time you came, I almost forgot what all the fighting was even for. Landon, the day you were born was the happiest day of my life. I fell in love with you from the moment I laid eyes on you. Every day since then has been wonderful; being your dad is the best thing that has ever happened to me. When I got that phone call saying you were in that accident, I felt like my world was crumbling. Somehow, by the grace of god, you pulled through and when you opened those green eyes of yours and looked at me that day in the hospital; the light came back into my world again. I might not have done everything right for you son but I have tried my hardest to be a good dad to you."

"You are; you have been the best dad I could have ever asked for. You have always been there for me and you have always had such patience, even when you shouldn't have. I love you dad. Please don't think you didn't do a good job raising me because you did a great job."

I sit up and pull my dad in for a tight hug as we both cry like idiots. Dad lets out a small chuckle and pats my back before breaking our hug to look at me as he wipes his face off with the backs of his hands.

"Look at the two of us, grown men, crying like babies." He laughs.

"I won't tell anyone if you don't."

"It'll be our little secret."

"You still didn't answer my question though."

"I know, I was getting there but then we started having a little heart to heart. Anyhow, three weeks after you were born, you mother begged me to let her leave. She was just so damn miserable but I begged her not to go. I told her it was important for you to have her around and I promised to do everything in my power to make it work. All those years she tried her hardest and I went out of my way to make things as easy as possible for her as I could but it just got too hard for her the older you got. By the time you were fourteen, she just couldn't see why she was needed in your life anymore. You and I had such a tight bond that I guess she felt like she was useless to you. All that hard work I put in to make things easy for her, only ended up backfiring on me. I guess maybe I might have made things too easy for her and that's why the last time she begged me to let her go; all the reasons she gave me started to make sense and I just couldn't find a way to make her stay anymore. So I let her go."
