Chapter 16

"Candice I'm not getting married on the beach. It's windy and sticky." Candice sighs and keeps looking through her magazine. Ian and I have been engaged two months now and are still deciding on a date and where we want to get married.

"What about a barn wedding?" She points to a picture in the magazine.

"I've thought about it, but I'm not sure." I flip another page. Ellie Kate crawls up to Candice and she picks her up.

"Ellie Kate where should Nina get married?" Ellie Kate looks at her and giggles before ripping a page in the magazine and making us laugh.

"Guess the barn is a no." I laugh.

"Ellie Kate did you go potty?" Candice looks into her diaper and makes a face. I start laughing. She lays Ellie Kate down and grabs a diaper from the bin.

"Nina do you care to run up to her room and grab her baby wipes? I forgot to bring some down." Candice asks and I close the magazine.

"Sure thing. Be right back." I say.

"Don't rush or anything, find me a gas mask while you're up there." Candice pokes Ellie Kate's belly and I laugh.

"Got the baby wipes but didn't find a gas ma..." I skip a step on the stairs and start to slide down.

"Nina!" Candice shouts and I stop at the bottom of the stairs.

"Nina! Are you okay? Oh my god." Candice bends down beside me. I hold my wrist to my chest and shake my head.

"I think I hurt my wrist." I tell her.

"We need to get you to the hospital. Come on." Candice helps me to my feet.

"Finish changing Ellie Kate. It hurts but I can deal with the pain." I say and she runs over to Ellie and starts changing her. We grab our stuff and head to the car.

"Yes Ian, they're about to take her back for X-rays. I'll call you back when she comes out with the news." Candice says into the phone.

"Okay Nina, we just need to ask a few questions and then we will take you back." The nurse says to me and grabs her pen from her pocket.

"Are you allergic to any medications?" She asks.

"No." I shake my head.

"Last period?" She asks.

"I don't know the answer to that. I haven't really kept up with it. When I'm on it, I'm on it." I tell her and she nods her head.

The doctor comes in and asks me to follow him down the hall to the X-ray room.

The nurse comes in and pulls him aside. I sit down on a chair and wait.

"Nina, just for precautions, we'd like to give you an ultrasound first." He says.

"An ultrasound? Why?" I ask confused.

"It says you don't remember your last period. And we just want to be safe." He says.

"Are you sexually active?" The nurse asks.

"Yes, but I'm on birth control." I tell her when we walk into another room.

"Just lay on that bed and pull your shirt up for me." She says and I lay back. She rubs some cream on to my belly and grabs the wand.

"Okay just lay very still for me if you can." She moves the wand over my belly. I don't even look at the screen cause I know I can't be pregnant.

She's quiet for a few minutes and then stops moving the wand.

"Anything in there besides the sandwich I had earlier?" I joke and she just looks at me. The smile disappears from my face and I sit up.
