I watch my boyfriend get up and hug his ex girlfriend, every bone in my body shaking with anger. Who the hell does she think she is? Showing up unexpectedly on Christmas, after breaking his heart. The nerve of this chick.
"Krissstie?" Roland jumps into the girls arms. I tried not to let it get to me, I really did, but seeing how happy he was to see her, it definitely hurt a little.
"Kristie, this is Kamryn!" Calum coughs awkwardly, bringing the skinny blonde haired girl over to where I was standing.
"Hello." I force a smile on my face as I try to be polite, but in reality I wanted nothing more then to bash her head against the wall.
"Hi, and you are?" She scans over me with a rude look across her face.
"His girlfriend." I snap rather harshly. Calum sending me a quick glare.
"Oh, well it's a pleasure to meet my replacement. Although I do have to say, Im a little disappointed, I thought you'd do a little better, Cal." She snorts and laughs.
Mali and I exchange a "Did she really just fucking say that look."
"So Kris, how long are you here for?" Calum cuts in to break up the tension that was like a dark cloud surrounding us. Hearing him use her old nickname was like nails on a chalkboard.
"As long as you want." She grins. "I moved into the apartments down the street."
My mouth drops, leaving me just standing there thinking this is all some sick joke. I honestly felt like I was on an episode of punked, and at any moment someone's gonna pop out and tell me this is all a prank.
"Can you stay for dinner?" Roland asks her.
"No, I think Kristie is busy unpacking since she just moved, maybe some other other time, sweetie." Mali says, knowing how awkward it would be for me.
"Nonsense. I always have time for my favorite little guy." She smiles and picks him up.
"Great, I'm gonna go start cooking then...Kam, wanna help me?" Mali suggests as the two of us make eye contact.
"Absolutely." I jump up probably too enthusiastically and follow her into the kitchen.
"What the hell is she doing here?" Mali runs her hands through her dark hair, visibly annoyed.
"I was gonna ask you the same think." I mock her tone, feeling just as annoyed as she was.
"I can't believe it." She shakes her head.
"Did you hear that rude comment." I roll my eyes.
"Don't let it get to you, she's just jealous Cal upgraded from her stupid ass." She smirks, making me feel a little better.
I stayed and helped Mali cook, avoiding the living room where my boyfriend and the she devil were "reminiscing" at all costs.
"I'm really sorry about all this, by the way." Mali apologizes. "I had no idea she would show up every again, especially not at Christmas."
"Its not your fault." I tell her.
"Still, I hate that bitch, you might have to hold me back if she doesn't shut up tonight." She jokes.
"We're awful." I laugh.
"Can I help at all?" The annoying voice interrupts us.
"No we're all set. Its almost ready anyways." Mali gives her a fake smile.
"Okay, well I'll go get the boys then." She chirps not catching on to our distaste for her.
After getting all the food out of the oven and cooked we set the table and then called everyone into the kitchen. It was difficult to see Calum with a smile on his face when he walked in. I love seeing him happy and, he deserves all the happiness in the world but it kills me to know she's the source. I sat in between Mali and Calum since Roland asked Kristie to sit by him. That stung a little but I brushed it off. He's four, he wasn't intentionally trying to hurt my feelings, even though he was.
"So Carmen, you're not from Australia are you?" Kristie starts talking as soon as we sit down.
"Its Kamryn, and no. Is it that obvious?" I have to stop myself from rolling my eyes.
"Well, you just don't look Australian." She says with a shrug.
"And what's that supposed to mean?" I crinkle my eyebrows.
"Oh, it's just you know, you can always tell whose American because they're always little more...plump."
Mali almost chokes on her food when she says that. It was obvious she was trying to get a reaction out of me, but I've never even skinny, my whole life I've been told I was chubby or fat, so I'm used to it. I've learned how to pretend it doesn't bother me. So I refused to give the satisfaction. I just smiled and ate another bite while I internally strangle her in my mind.
"So, Kris, What brings you back to Sydney?" Calum changes the subject quickly.
"I missed you." She says putting her hand on his.
This time I almost choked on my food. I look over at Calum who has a a blank expression on his face.
"The food is great, Mali." I ignore the comment and focus my attention on my best friend.
"Thanks, you did such a great job on the Mac and cheese." She compliments.
"Its my mom recipe." I smile.
"Actually, I was gonna say the macaroni and cheese is a little dry...but everything else is amazing." Kristie says looking at me.
"Dry like your hair." I mumble low.
"Excuse me?" Kristie looks over at me offended.
"Nothing." I grin.
The rest of the dinner was filled with snide remarks and uncomfortable silence. I didn't even look at Calum because I was so upset with him. I couldn't believe that he was just letting her insult me over and over again. That's what hurts the worst, he didn't even try to defend me.
We all move into the living room for dessert and a movie at Roland's request. Kristie sits down next to Calum, way too close for my comfort but I didn't say anything, it wasn't my place too. Calum should have told her to move, but he didn't.
"Oh, that ring is gorgeous." Kristie takes my hand and admires my Christmas present.
"Thank you." I say flatly.
"It reminds me of the promise ring you gave me, remember that, babe?" She turns to face Calum.
That was it. That was the last straw. I don't even wait for Calum to protest before storming out, but at this point I'm not sure he would.
